The AXIOM Gamma will be the third AXIOM iteration and the first one that will actually look like a film camera. It is planned to utilize a modular hardware concept (the "Open Module Concept") that allows swapping of all essential camera components like changing PCI cards in your PC. But since this modularity also includes the enclosure there is no single way the AXIOM Gamma can look like, below you see different stages and design studies that show different designs.

At the Project Ara Developer’s Conference in Santa Clara, California, the moment of unveiling was a bit of a letdown. When project lead Paul Eremenko got ready for the big reveal — finally showing off Google’s vision for a modular phone with working, user-interchangeable components — he had to dampen expectations from the enthusiastic crowd. “You should temper your applause,” he warned, explaining that the device had been damaged the previous day. “We did crack the screen, and the phone doesn’t quite boot.” A disappointment, sure, but it did little to actually temper anything.

Modular Phones Are A Brilliant Idea. It’s Too Bad We May Never Have Them.

Modular Phones Are A Brilliant Idea. It’s Too Bad We May Never Have Them. | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In October, Motorola unveiled Project Ara, a development initiative aimed at creating modular smartphones that snap together as easily as LEGOs. Users will mix and match the modules they want—screens, batteries, cameras, keyboards—and connect them to a standard phone skeleton. Developers will have first crack at the system to design their own modules before Ara makes it into consumers’ hands. It’s an exciting, and entirely feasible, proposition that could completely transform our relationship to phones. But there’s a problem: It could also spell doom for manufacturers.

That means, phones with components that can be be easily removed and changed to make new phones that is like building a very own smartphones with personal touch. “The design for Project Ara consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules.  The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter--or something not yet thought of” says Motorola about the new phones that will come as part of the project.

The Official Motorola Blog: Goodbye Sticky. Hello Ara.

The Official Motorola Blog: Goodbye Sticky. Hello Ara. | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Over the last six months, our MAKEwithMOTO team took Sticky, a truck wrapped entirely in velcro and filled with rooted, hackable Motorola smartphones and high-end 3D printing equipment, across the country for a series of make-a-thons. On that trip we saw the first signs of a new, open hardware ecosystem made possible by advances in additive manufacturing and access to the powerful computational capabilities of modern smartphones. These included new devices and applications that we could never have imagined from inside our own labs. Open fuels innovation. See some examples here, here, and here.
