“There is a beautiful Buddhist scripture, the ‘Flower Garland Sutra’, that contains an empowering metaphor that can help us navigate the waters of authentic collaboration. In the sutra is description of a net used by the King of the Hindu Gods, Indra. The net, draped over his palace on Mount Meru, goes on infinitely (he is the king of the Gods after all); and, hanging at each cross-point, is a jewel. If you look closely at one of the jewels, in its polished surface you can see all the other jewels reflected right up to infinity. Each jewel relies on the brightness and integrity of the others for its own luminosity. Each jewel contains an image every other jewel, just as any part of a hologram contains all the information of the entire image. In other words, in every mote of dust, the entirety of the universe resides.

Towards a Security and Opportunity Society - P2P Foundation

Towards a Security and Opportunity Society - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Over the past generation, the economic risks American families face have increased substantially. Yet public programs have largely failed to adapt to these new and newly intensified risks, and private workplace benefits have eroded. As a result, Americans increasingly and themselves on an economic tightrope, without an adequate safety net if, as is ever more likely, they lose their footing. This tightrope both creates anxiety about the future and causes hardship when families do lose their balance. But importantly, it also threatens opportunity by making it more difficult for families to feel sufficiently secure to look confidently toward the future and make the risky investments in skills, education, and assets necessary to prosper in a highly dynamic and uncertain economy.

No Middlemen Cost Cutting Networks in Greece - P2P Foundation

No Middlemen Cost Cutting Networks in Greece - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"In their search for solutions, Greeks are tinkering with a new kind of economy with little precedent in modern Europe. The collapse of the Greek economy is challenging not only the survival of Greeks, but also some of the basic mechanisms of capitalism in a nation where the economy has shrunk by about 25 percent since 2008.

Employers Alliances in France and Europe - P2P Foundation

Employers Alliances in France and Europe - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

To summarize. The idea is getting together fairly small private employers to create a non-profit legal entity. Often, these small businesses cannot afford full time staff for different tasks. And on the other hand, there are jobless or part time people who want regular full time jobs. There is also seasonal needs like in agriculture or in tourism.

The word "open" has become trendy. It is important to distinguish between (for example) APIs for data which come with restrictive use agreements, and true openness through open licenses and open wikis.

Trade Union and Cooperative Solutions To Self-Employment - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"There are now more self-employed workers than at any time since modern records began. Some 4.6 million people, around 15 per cent of the workforce, are now self-employed and data from the Office for National Statistics show that two thirds of new jobs in the UK created in recent years are down to self-employment.

Manifesto for a Common Ground for Independent Workers - P2P Foundation

Manifesto for a Common Ground for Independent Workers - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"New technologies and business models are fundamentally changing the economic landscape across the country, adding value to consumers’ lives and bringing new opportunities for workers. These changes are also raising questions about the changing nature of work in America for businesses, workers, labor organizations, governments, and consumers alike. As our country has at prior moments of workplace change, we must find a path forward that encourages innovation, embraces new models, creates certainty for workers, business, and government and ensures that workers and their families can lead sustainable lives and realize their dreams. Work today takes many forms. Many people move from one employer to another, work outside of a traditional full-time employment relationship (often as part-time workers, independent contractors, freelancers or self-employed workers) and earn income from multiple sources. By some estimates, as many as 53 million Americans are now self-employed. Yet our understanding of the relationship between businesses and workers — and the benefits and protections that evolved to support this relationship — have not kept pace with the rapid changes in the economy. New business models and technological innovations are providing a fresh opportunity to look at longstanding questions related to flexible and temporary work and the types of benefits and responsibilities workers and companies should expect.

One of the most common worries about P2P is that it will erode social rights. The key to understanding P2P solidarity is that P2P is not just a policy offering new solutions for existing problems, but a new system that changes the problems altogether.

Worker Support Infrastructure in the Emerging Peer Economy - P2P Foundation

Worker Support Infrastructure in the Emerging Peer Economy - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"The peer economy is a framework of online, peer-to-peer marketplaces that enable people to monetize skills and assets they already have (see figure 4). To a provider, the peer economy is immediate relief. It provides an income stream while also freeing providers to choose when to work, what to do, and where to complete the work. Providers sidestep traditional constraints such as geography or rigid work schedules. Those who did not find inclusion in a traditional workplace—stay-at-home carers, the elderly, those varying in physical and mental ableness—suddenly have an empowering way to generate income.

Humanitarianism in the Network Age - P2P Foundation

Humanitarianism in the Network Age - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) have just published a groundbreaking must-read study on Humanitarianism in the Network Age; an important and forward-thinking policy document on humanitarian technology and innovation. The report “imagines how a world of increasingly informed, connected and self-reliant communities will affect the delivery of humanitarian aid. Its conclusions suggest a fundamental shift in power from capital and headquarters to the people [that] aid agencies aim to assist.” The latter is an unsettling prospect for many. To be sure, Humanitarianism in the Network Age calls for “more diverse and bottom-up forms of decision-making—something that most Governments and humanitarian organizations were not designed for. Systems constructed to move information up and down hierarchies are facing a new reality where information can be generated by any-one, shared with anyone and acted by anyone.” (http://irevolution.net/2013/04/09/humanitarianism-network-age/)

= Mutual Development = working together for mutual benefit, with common contribution to address local challenge | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Mutual Development should benefit all parties through non financial means. It should be a joy. It should create benefit. It should cause peoples eyes to light up, inspired, to move us all beyond the daily drudge or contribution for money. It is a space where dreams can meet and realities emerge. Mutual Development implies Mutual Benefit, that everyone draws what they need from the process, and creates opportunities to improve their quality of life.
