A Shareable Explainer: What is a Platform Co-op? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Bringing the Platform Co-op "Rebel Cities" Together: An Interview with Trebor Scholz

Bringing the Platform Co-op "Rebel Cities" Together: An Interview with Trebor Scholz | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Trebor Scholz, Associate Professor for Culture & Media at the New School and author of the book Uber-Worked and Underpaid: How Workers Are Disrupting the Digital Economy (Polity, 2016). He is currently touring European cities to talk about platform cooperativism.  Platform cooperativism, as he puts it, is "a way of joining the peer-to-peer and co-op movements with online labor markets while insisting on communal ownership and democratic governance." I talked to him about this young movement, its rise, and the steps ahead.

Platform cooperativism as a critique of open-source

Platform cooperativism as a critique of open-source | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I am a pretty assiduous digital commoner, for what it’s worth. I almost exclusively use free/libre/open-source software (hereafter FLOSS), evangelistically so. I try to practice open journalism. I’ve run and developed business models for organizations devoted to producing Creative Commons content. I believe that property is theft, ultimately, and I hold the ancient doctrine of the universal destination of goods. But I also consider my support of the platform cooperative movement to be, in part, a critique of the digital commons movement so far.

PLATFORM COOPERATIVISM
Challenging the Corporate Sharing Economy title

The “sharing economy” wasn’t supposed to be this way. Aided by the tiny computers most of us carry with us all day, every day, we would be free from the burdens of ownership and making money in our spare time by renting out our unused possessions. The vison was—or at least appeared to be—an idealistic one. Even before they enter kindergarten, every child learns the value of sharing, and here were the beneficent forces of Silicon Valley bringing us innovative new tools to strengthen our com- munities, disrupt outdated ways of doing business, and maybe even reduce our carbon footprints.
