I love Barcelona, and this is nothing new, but sometimes it even manages to surprise me: during the first week of July, in fact, the Catalan capital become the global center of culture of the new industrial revolution. The week of June 30 began with the first day of the beautiful, intimate and now classic, Open Design Shared Creativity conference now in its third edition.

Open Platforms: Another way that firms are tapping into talent is throughopen technology. Rather than building products as closed platforms, they are providing resources, such as SDK’s and API’s, so that outside developers can enhance and expand the capabilities that were designed in-house. After all, the value of an iPhone depends not just on the hardware and the operating system, but on the hundreds of thousands of apps that others have built for it. In a similar vein, IBM recently opened up its Watson platform to outside developers to help reap the benefits of external talent.

Collaboration has been an industry buzz word for as long as I dare to remember. However, despite the hype, collaboration tools have on the whole under-delivered and underperformed. For a majority of users, collaboration platforms are low on usability, high on awkwardness and frequently fragmented.
