The 'share economy' is just another form of capitalism - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The 'share economy' is just another form of capitalism - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Author Jeremy Rifkin describes the so-called “share economy” as “the first new economic system to emerge since the advent of socialism and capitalism in the 19th century” (“The ‘Share’ Economy Is Here to Stay,” July 6). New economic system? Really?

The Sharing Economy: Capitalism's Last Stand? - Resilience.org | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Access over ownership. After decades of excessive consumerism, this prospect sounded revolutionary. At first. Now that the sharing economy has become mainstream, more critical voices are appearing. So, what will it be? Empowerment or exploitation? A revolution or business as usual?

Capitalism Headed for Collapse? How the Sharing Economy Might Break the Fall. |

Capitalism Headed for Collapse? How the Sharing Economy Might Break the Fall. | | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In my last two posts, I painted a gloomy picture of our current state of affairs due to the over-commodification of everything and the devaluation of labor, with no benefit equation other than a numerical financial value going to increasingly fewer people. This trend can result in the collapse of the whole system, possibly after a period of unpleasant hegemony by the few and suffering of the rest. Extreme as that sounds, it’s not unrealistic. The bad news streaming by on my feeds far outnumbers the small gains in environmental laws upheld, minimum wage promoted, or a judge upholding civil liberties, property rights or voting rights somewhere.

Sharing economy companies are realizing tremendous success. Airbnb, for example, has served nine million guests since its inception in 2008; five million of those were served in the last year. While the media touts the rapid growth of such companies, part of their success is due to the profits that individuals are earning. Over the last three years, Airbnb’s top New York hosts have each grossed over $400,000. Within that same time period, its top 100 New York hosts have grossed $54 million collectively. Though the car-sharing business does not yield the same scale of individual profits, an owner of a high-end car can expect to earn approximately $1,200 a month.

The Sharing Economy Isn't Quite a Kick to Capitalism's Crotch

The Sharing Economy Isn't Quite a Kick to Capitalism's Crotch | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The event had clearly attracted people from both camps. It wasn’t long before one guest trumpeted a desire to “kick capitalism in the crotch,” while several others gently reminded people to sign a petition supporting Airbnb, the peer-to-peer apartment renting service. One man offered to sing a few songs. I spent much of the evening wondering why my red pepper hummus, which is always a hit at Super Bowl parties, wasn’t as popular as the vegan mac ‘n’ cheese. Plus whoever made the salad put in way too many red onions.

Uber of course is a cab service that lets you order a cab from your smartphone via an App. It’s really neat, you get to watch the cab approach on a map, the payment is automatically applied so you don’t have to even deal with the transaction itself. The company is now taking its approach to logistics, and moving to ‘disrupt’ the delivery industry as well, competing with courier services, UPS, Fedex, and the Post Office. It’ll be interesting to see what happens there.

8 Ways Corporate Greed Is Perverting the Idea of the 'Sharing Economy' | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In the “sharing economy,” cheap access to resources that would otherwise go unused (a spare bedroom, a car, a weed whacker) is just one click away. And for many consumers of services like  AirBnB and Lyft and TaskRabbit, the “sharing economy” is  pretty nifty.
