The hope of the democratic monster, between Syriza and Podemos | transversal texts

“A spectre is haunting Europe”. The Italian newspaper Il Manifesto used this headline a few days ago for its homepage, commenting on the visits of Tsipras and Varoufakis to European governments. A real nightmare for the ordoliberal Germans, a Geisterfahrer, to be precise, a suicidal conductor looking to collide with the European bus, as Der Spiegel described on its front pageImagine what could happen with the victory of Podemos in Spain: what a magnificent spectre would then be seen lurking about, a real monster created by the exploited and the productive forces of the fourth European economy! In just a few weeks, election rounds will begin in Spain, and the mantra of the European governments will be repeated, with double the force, in an attempt to frighten Spanish citizens. Let us prepare ourselves. With the certainty that the arrogance of the bad omens of this propaganda will be defeated. But in the meantime, let us prepare ourselves: What could Podemos say about Europe?

What I Learned from Meeting Greece’s New Finance Minister

What I Learned from Meeting Greece’s New Finance Minister | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In 2011 while preparing to deliver a TEDx talk in Athens, I recall thinking I had taken on a Herculean task in addressing the topic of hope in the most hopeless country in Europe. Until I saw the title of the speaker directly before me. Yianis Varoufakis delivered an address entitled “A Modest Proposal for Transforming Europe.” It was anything but modest. He was an economic advisor and academic back then. He is now Greece’s new minister of finance and the architect of the economic platform that swept the left-wing Syriza party to election victory.

Leftist Syriza Party Victory in Greece Strengthens Anti-Austerity Movement Across Europe | Democracy At Work

Running on an uncompromising anti-austerity platform, Greece’s Syriza party, the Coalition of the Radical Left, won a decisive victory over the conservative New Democracy party in the economically battered nation’s Jan. 25 election. Syriza fell only two seats short of winning an absolute majority in Greece’s 300-seat Parliament, prompting party leader Alexis Tsipras to form an alliance with the small, center right Independent Greeks party to form a governing coalition.

Living conditions in southern Europe have become intolerable. In Spain a family is evicted every fifteen minutes for failing to meet mortgage payments – this in a country with enough empty properties to house all of Europe’s homeless. That’s just slightly longer than it will take to read this article.

"The first affect that comes into mind is relief. People who did not live in Greece, or even visit it occasionally, the past years, cannot imagine how unbearable the Samaras administration had become, from a political, but also an ethical and even an esthetic point of view. It is hard to explain the feeling of suffocation produced by this domination based on fear, hatred, self-underestimation, and almost all other negative passions, compensated on the imaginary level by an overdose of nationalistic self-glorification and vanity."

Yanis Varoufakis is widely expected to become Greece’s new finance minister after Syriza, an upstart left-wing party made up of marxists, greens, communists, and everything in between, won elections there. As you might expect, he’s no ordinary financier—his preparations for leading Greece out of austerity included a year as the chief economist for a bustling virtual economy.

Syriza’s victory has electrified the left in Europe — even moderate social democrats who have floundered in search of ideas and inspiration since the 2008 crisis. Now there is talk everywhere of “doing a Syriza” — and in Spain, where the leftist party Podemos is scoring 25% in the polls, more than talk.
