Smart Cities -- A $1.5 trillion market opportunity - Forbes

Smart Cities -- A $1.5 trillion market opportunity - Forbes | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “India is to be found not in its few cities, but in its 700,000 villages.” Though that may at one time have been true, it is no longer the case. With about 30 country dwellers moving lock, stock and barrel every minute from Indian villages to become city dwellers, not many villages will be left in India by end of this century.

In a smart city, networks will need to be able to handle a massive amount of connected devices and much more data traffic than today. All this needs to be done in a low cost and sustainable way. In order to cope with such challenges in the smart city, Ericsson is working to support mobile operators with clear strategies to complement the evolution of existing technologies with the latest LTE innovative products and solutions that will enable even more efficient, scalable and versatile networks.

The proliferation of 'smart' solutions to a deluge of political and economic problems in today's cities may well serve to reinforce urban inequality at a time when new radical alternatives are in desperate need.

What smart cities can learn from Memphis - Soapbox Cincinnati

What smart cities can learn from Memphis - Soapbox Cincinnati | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The story of sprawl in Memphis begins as early as the 1950s and with one of the first suburban shopping centers in the country, Poplar Plaza, built at the edge of the city’s eastern limit. The sprawl continued in earnest throughout the ’70s, cutting into the surrounding county with the deliberateness and tenacity of a Mississippi River current as developers gobbled up land further and further east. One interstate loop was built around the city, then another.

Platforms for Experiencing Nature

Platforms for Experiencing Nature | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

For millennium, designers of our built and natural environments have positioned the viewer in nature, setting benches in just the right spots with gorgeous vistas, or even creating pavilions or pagodas that offer both a respite from the world and a vantage point for engaging with it. Contemporary landscape architects and architects are creating singular platforms for experiencing nature. In these examples, the biophilic platforms are as appealing as the surrounding nature.

Maureen Calamia's curator insight, January 17, 2017 10:06 AM
These are also called "power spots." Power spots are places that provide a sense of well being and connection to nature. They can offer grand views or quiet, restorative views.

They are often the intersection of two or more positive energy lines, be they earth energy or grid lines.

cityofsound: Essay: On the smart city; Or, a 'manifesto' for smart citizens instead | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Oh, the smart city. I have “previous” here, over about a decade of writing about the interplay between cities and technology. And particularly, having written about The Street As Platform, and thePersonal Well-Tempered Environment, and The Adaptive City, and about New Songdo City, and "new smokestacks", and how it’s easier to crowd-source a revolution than a light-rail system, and so on. And then worked on many projects, which I hope to scribble more about one day here, from Barangaroo to Brickstarter, Masdar to Melbourne.

Smart Citizen: advancing towards collective intelligence

Smart Citizen: advancing towards collective intelligence | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Smart Citizen, in short, has created a tool that advances towards an intelligent city model, seeking to connect citizens with their urban environment in an optimal manner. Barcelona, as a mobile capital, has been the city chosen by Tomás Diez's team to implement the initial phase of the project, the starting point for the creation of a global Smart community. This is also why this summer Barcelona will host the 10th Fab Labs world congress, Fab 10, co-organized by Institut de Arquitectura Avançada de Catalunya (IAAC), FabLab Barcelona, Barcelona City Council, MIT and the Fab Lab Foundation.

There is a need for a story about the smart city that puts the social and political challenges on the table, and can ask critical questions about our cities. We have to widen the concept so that it can represent the experience of citizens’ daily lives.

A Review of Adam Greenfield's Against the Smart City

A Review of Adam Greenfield's Against the Smart City | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I started reading Adam Greenfield’s new book, Against the Smart City, with the expectation that it would be a critical view of the ways our urban lives have changed during the past half decade with the massive adoption of so-called “smart phones” and the rest of the ubiquitous technosphere. But it turns out he has a rather different target in mind. His polemic, delivered by EPUB and kindle only (so far), is directed at a techno-utopian fantasy promulgated by large multinational corporations and their government client-sponsors.

The Time Is Ripe for Smart Cities - IT Business Edge (blog)

The Time Is Ripe for Smart Cities - IT Business Edge (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It’s interesting that smart home technology gets so much attention while smart cities remain in the background. It’s also strange: If you have enough smart homes, it is easy to somehow link them together into a citywide or regional initiative. The two initiatives should be proceeding hand in hand.
