Personalized Learning Through the Eyes of a Child

Personalized Learning Through the Eyes of a Child | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Pam Lowe, Personalized Learning Coach, wrote an insightful post about her young niece questioning why can't learning be personalized.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
Pam Lowe shares her story about her 4 year-old niece and her insight into personalized learning:

"Basically at the wise old age of four, the question my niece was asking me that currently many educators and schools are struggling to comprehend was,

“Why can’t learning be personalized?”

When a child can recognize the need for personalized learning, why can’t our education system? My niece is not viewing personalized learning as a buzzword or a fad. She is viewing personalized learning as a right that is due her as a learner." - See more at: http://www.personalizelearning.com/#sthash.yHJTVyEu.dpuf

Why Content Matters: Defining Personalization | Barbara Bray - Rethinking Learning

Why Content Matters: Defining Personalization | Barbara Bray - Rethinking Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"Some companies are using the term "personalized learning" when actually they are designing courses or platforms where the teacher can control who accesses particular content or quizzes based on their answers. To me that's customized and still teacher-directed. There is a difference between personalization and differentiation. One is learner-centered; the other is teacher-centered.

Teachers are confused about the term "personalized learning" because they only know how to teach they way they were taught. So when I come in and talk about student-centered learning and starting with the learner, it just doesn't happen right away. There are teachers that are posting lessons using the term "personalized learning" but have all control. I say "maybe this is the first step" to moving to student-centered learning, but it is not there yet."

As a curator on personalized learning, there are numerous definitions being thrown around and I want to note from my research on the subject of personalized learning that it is about the individual learner.  There is no shortcuts in understanding each learner.  Let's stop and take the time to know the learner from the perspective of their strengths, weaknesses, aptitudes and aspirations. It is paramount that the learner understand how he or she learns and then develop the skills to self-direct their learning.

"Perhaps an early test of B.C.’s personalization mandate should be our ability to achieve that commitment for those who need it most: those for whom the currently organized system provides the greatest challenges and barriers. How do we meet them where they are and honour their life experiences to date? How do we scaffold their early engagement in our schools to support long term success? How does learning begin, make sense and become authentic and relevant through their eyes?"

In Pursuit of Personalized Learning

In Pursuit of Personalized Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The complex needs of our 21st century learners are driving our education systems to a new focus on personalized learning. Articles, videos and blogs with impressive examples of personalized learning are flooding the media. Many examples involve uses of technology that amaze and motivate us to move forward in that direction, but what can we do in the meantime? Are there basic shifts in focus we can take to move us forward without weeks of PD or specialized training?

The four descriptions in this blog help to clarify PL and identify some strategies that foster this preferred way of learning. These strategies are already evident in our classrooms and with more emphasis can be used as a springboard to greater personalized learning opportunities.

1. "Teaching students HOW to think instead of WHAT to think"

2. "Opening the door to Choices"

3. "Creating collaborative cultures"

4. "Showcasing the Learning Process"

Ten Critical Components That Guarantee Learning Will Stick

If you incorporate each of these 10 items into your learning delivery, you’ll ensure that your learning will stick.

One of these items is personalized learning.

"Personalized learning requires not only a shift in the design of schooling, but also a leveraging of modern technologies. Personalization can’t take place at scale without technology. Personalized learning is enabled by smart e-learning systems, which help dynamically track and manage the learning needs of all students, and provide a platform to access myriad engaging learning content, resources and learning opportunities needed to meet each students needs everywhere at anytime, but which aren’t all available within the 4 walls of the traditional classroom."

"Digital learning has the potential to personalize learning to meet each student’s needs, ensure all students have access to quality teaching, extend learning opportunities to all hours of the day and all days of the week, and innovate and improve over time. Indeed, there is the potential not only to help solve many of the most pressing issues in K–12 education, but to do so in a cost-effective manner. Because of this, it’s clear that advocates will be increasingly successful in changing policies to open up access to digital learning throughoutour nation."

BC Education Plan - Personalized Learning: Actions and Initiatives

"Under the Plan, teachers, students and parents will work together to make sure every student’s needs are met, passions are explored and goals are achieved. This means student-centered learning that’s focused on the needs, strengths and aspirations of each individual young person. Students will play an active role in designing their own education and will be increasingly accountable for their own learning success. It’s all about putting students at the centre of education. That means giving teachers and schools the flexibility to make sure each student is well served by their educational program. Each student is unique and our education system will support each student’s interests and ways of learning."

Digital Learning should be Personalized Learning

Digital Learning should be Personalized Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Learning is most effective when it’s personalized. That happens when people feel they are participants in their own learning, shaping what and how they learn, and able to articulate its value to them.

The teachers role is changing from a one-to-many distributor of content (lecturing), to a facilitator of one-to-many personalized and blended learning environments, and reinforcement over time to create individual mastery. Technology must individually deliver proven accelerated learning methodologies for participants to enage the content interactively over time.

This post by Jessie C. gives an overview of UDL and how technology can personalize learning.

Create Personalized Learning Communities for Students and Adults | Institute for Research and Reform in Education

Create Personalized Learning Communities for Students and Adults | Institute for Research and Reform in Education | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
For over 14 years, the Institute for Research and Reform in Education (IRRE) has partnered with schools, states, and districts to develop more personalized, engaging, and rigorous learning environments in struggling secondary schools.

"Students will reach higher and work harder when they feel known and valued as individuals. In this, they are no different from their teachers and families. Personalized learning communities can become the foundation for greater student achievement by building on this simple principle. These communities put young people and adults in a position to know each other well, hold each other responsible, and set clear and high expectations for how each of them will contribute to student success."

Opening Doors | How do you personalize instruction?

Opening Doors | How do you personalize instruction? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
"How do you start personalizing instruction in your classroom?" "So, to answer your question, Whitney, I wouldn't begin by personalizing the instruction, I would... grow my own powerful personal learning network to include uplifting, thought-provoking people, resources and ideas use the vast array of technology tools to help me connect and learn with these people, resources and ideas and then...then...I would... create spaces for my students that permit them to create their own spaces for personalized learning to occur and I would be there to guide and support them in their explorations. It requires refocusing on learning...not teaching. (The instructional practices will be driven by the learning.)"

For the Love of Learning: The Politics of Personalization in the 21st Century

For the Love of Learning: The Politics of Personalization in the 21st Century | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"In David Hargreaves’ view, personalized learning represents a larger movement that needs to be put forward on several fronts to (re)shape teaching and learning. His nine gateways to personalizing learning are assessment for learning; learning to learn; student voice; curriculum; new technologies; school design and organization; advice and guidance; mentoring and coaching; and workforce development (Hargreaves 2006)."

"Personalized learning is often represented as a novel approach to enhancing the pedagogical practices of educators to broadly reorganize schooling in the 21st century. The personalized (re)shaping of teaching and learning is generally to be achieved through assessing the strengths of individuals and then addressing the specific needs and learning styles of each student in a school community."

Does Educational Technology Equate to Personalized Learning?

"Advancement in technology = changing face of education

Well, this particular equation shared by technology and education has played a major role in changing the life of millions of enthusiast learners in shaping their academic and professional life. Technology in 21st century has conveniently changed the face of distance learning transpiring it into the digital world. Learning via distance that until a decade back relied upon postal services witnessed a ray of light under the tech-influence by going online. This development in education has indeed paved the way for using technologies to improve personalized learning. Personalizing education undeniably would make education for student –centric restricting the teacher’s role to just an instructor."
