Put the "Person" in "Personalization"

Put the "Person" in "Personalization" | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
It's all about the learner. Not technology or improving test scores. It's time to take semantics out of the conversations and focus on what really matters: the learners.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

It's not about technology. It's really not about school. It's all about the learner, the "person" in "personalization" and how they learn best and that what they learn is meaningful and for a purpose.  It is all about the relationships that learners make and need to support their learning. It is also about the teacher - a valuable person in the relationship. Teachers and learners can work together to develop learning goals and design activities that are authentic and relevant for the learner so they are engaged in learning. Learning has to have a context that learners can grasp and understand. - See more at: http://www.personalizelearning.com/2015/10/put-person-in-personalization.html#sthash.qyM0Grkz.dpuf

What Do We Really Mean When We Say ‘Personalized Learning’?

What Do We Really Mean When We Say ‘Personalized Learning’? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
The definition of "personalized learning" is as varied as the richness of instruction tailored to learners.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Diane Laufenberg, director of Inquiry Schools, shares her understanding of what "Personalized Learning" means.

”For Laufenberg, personalization only comes when students have authentic choice over how to tackle a problem. A personalized environment gives students the freedom to follow a meaningful line of inquiry, while building the skills to connect, synthesize and analyze information into original productions."

New Revised Version of Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization (PDI) Chart, Ver 3 (Dec 2013)

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

In this new version, we have included clarification on Assessment OF, FOR and AS Learning.

>Individualization involves assessment OF learning. This is where summative assessment is grade-based and involves testing to confirm what learners know and do not know.

> Differentiation  involves assessment FOR learning and OF learning. This is assessment that involves time-based testing where teachers provide feedback to advance learning.

> Personalization involves assessment AS learning, FOR learning, and a minimal OF learning. This is where teachers develop capacity so learners become independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning. Assessments are based on mastery.

I love this graphic of the difference between Personalisation, Differenctiation and Individulisation. We often use the words interchangeably but as with anything, the language becomes important when you are trying to communicate to people - including teachers.

I've used this with teachers at my school, in small groups, to talk about what it is we are actually doing in the classroom....

The Connected Learner in a PLE

The Connected Learner in a PLE | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

We are all learners. We are connected to each other and innovative learning experiences that we never thought were possible before. It doesn't matter how old you are, where you live, and what you want to learn, you can connect to people, resources, and courses so you, the learner, can learn what you want when you want to. This means what we call "school" is different. Teachers and learners are different. Roles change. This is a huge culture shift.

The information from our chart Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization chart is about being a Connected Learner in a Personal Learning Environment (PLE).

> starts with the learner

> connects with interests, passions, and aspirations

> learners actively participate in the design of their learning

> learners have a voice and choice on what they learn

> different objectives for each learner

> learner selects appropriate technology and resources to support their learning

> learners build a network of peers, teachers, and others to guide and support their learning

> competency-based models where the learner demonstrates mastery

> assessment AS learning

> teachers develop capacity to create independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning

"Value of the teacher; impact of the classroom experience; personalizing all of this for the student: where do we start?

"Personalizing education? It’s a four step dance set to a culture of learning beat and anyone can groove to it if they are willing to learn it now."

>  Step Two:  Assessment - Consider "Strinberg's new construct in "The Rainbow Project":  creativity and expression through narrative.

> Step Three:  "Personal" Talk - "Instead of creating adult initiated curriculum to match a specific assessment, we now engage in one to ones (virtual and face to face) with students to determine what “passion” they wish to pursue in their “inquiry” to demonstrate mastery."

> Step Four:  The Teachers of Tomorrow are in Our Classroom Today - Bringing together the expertise who are passionate about inviting others on a path of inquiry-based learning.

Personalized Learning is NOT Differentiating Instruction | Barbara Bray - Rethinking Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Barbara's blog outlines the differences between "personalization", "individualization" and "differentiation".  These three words in education often are confused and misunderstood by professionals as well as the general community. Barbara concludes her remarks by what personalized learning would mean in the classroom. Thank you, Barbara!

"Personalizing learning starts with the learner. It is not personalized instruction. The teacher, the school, and textbook companies can individualize instruction for the different types of learners. Personalized learning means the students drive their learning and the teacher IS the guide on the side, the co-designer of their learning, and more of a facilitator to make sure the students are meeting their learning goals."

"In David Hargreaves’ view, personalized learning represents a larger movement that needs to be put forward on several fronts to (re)shape teaching and learning. His nine gateways to personalizing learning are assessment for learning; learning to learn; student voice; curriculum; new technologies; school design and organization; advice and guidance; mentoring and coaching; and workforce development (Hargreaves 2006)."

"Personalized learning is often represented as a novel approach to enhancing the pedagogical practices of educators to broadly reorganize schooling in the 21st century. The personalized (re)shaping of teaching and learning is generally to be achieved through assessing the strengths of individuals and then addressing the specific needs and learning styles of each student in a school community."

PERSONALIZED LEARNING STARTS WITH THE LEARNER, NOT TECHNOLOGY

PERSONALIZED LEARNING STARTS WITH THE LEARNER, NOT TECHNOLOGY | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Personalized Learning is a controversial term that means different things to different people depending on where and how it is referenced. Some believe it is about promoting programs or tools that per
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Both of us are advocates for the use of technology to support instruction and to help learners gain independent learning skills. For years, as coaches consulting on technology integration, we observed classrooms where technology sat idle or to present lessons using new tools but the same way they teach: teacher-directed. The current system seems to encourage the use of technology for traditional teacher-directed methods.

The system needs to change from focusing on problems to rethinking the design of teaching and learning around how learners learn best. Personalized learning starts with the learner, not the technology!

Elliot Washor writes a post about what really is personalization and deeper learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Elliot Washor, co-founder of Big Picture Learning, reflects on what Personalization means. Joins us in a free live webinar on April 22nd at 5pm ET where Elliot will share his professional insights on personalization.

Here are just a few excerpts from this post that looks deeper into the meaning of personalization.

"Since our beginnings, personalization has been at the core of our work. We strive for schools to be communities where every student is known through their interests, academics and how they are doing socially and emotionally in and outside of school. "

"Structures in schools — like personalized learning plans that start with each student’s voice, choice and interests where parents, teachers and mentors are involved in understanding and developing the next steps, courses and projects a student will do ‑—need to be part of any learning environment and can become a great digital technology platform. Instead, what we get is a hijacking of words and terms that sound like education is personalized. Sadly, the real practice these words symbolize is missing from far too many schools and most digital platforms."

When learning is personal, teaching and learning changes. Teachers' and learners' roles change. Last January, we created a chart comparing Personalization vs Individualization vs Differentiation and a report that explained the difference between these three terms including teacher-centered vs. learner-centered approaches. This chart has been downloaded tens of thousands of times from all over the world and prompted discussions around some of these questions:

> What does personalized or personal learning mean to you?

> How do you see teachers' and learners' roles changing?

> How does a school or district know they are Ready to Transform learning?

> What is Assessment AS Learning?

> Can personalization help close the achievement gap?

> Where are the conversations, models, and examples of personalizing learning?

These questions were part of an interview from Patricia Gomes, a reporter from Porvir in Brazil who wrote an article August 12, 2012 about the chart and resulted in an article and infographic in Portuguese.

David Truss: Personalization and Responsibility

David Truss: Personalization and Responsibility | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

David Truss ponts out that personalization is about the learner taking responsibility for their learning.  He includes that educators are also learners and substitutes "educators" in a paragraph in our report where we explain the chart on "Personalization vs. Differentiation vs. Individualization".

"Going back to Bray & McClaskey, have a look at the last sentence I quoted above, only switch ‘learners’ to ‘educators’: “When [educators] reflect on their own learning and must communicate it to others, they are intensifying their understanding about a topic, their learning strengths, and the areas in which they need to develop further.”

We need to personalize the learning for our educators and our students… seeing both first and foremost as learners. We can’t cookie-cutter our professional development to teachers and expect meaningful results. We can’t evaluate students based on tests with easily Googleable answers. We can develop a sense of learner responsibility by personalizing learning, making it meaningful and making it work that matters.

Finally, if we decide to look at educators and students as learners first, then we also need to recognize the responsibility that comes with being a learner. So much of what I read about now is about things ‘we need to do’ to support the learner. But be they educators or students, learners need first to understand the importance of their own role in learning. Personalization isn’t just about catering to a learner, it is also about learner autonomy and thus learner responsibility."

Thank you David in making the connections and in sharing your Manifesto!

I am in Wisconsin and we are part of CESA 1 NxGL. I team teach with 42 kindergarten kids and we are using personalized learning. We are working through the tangles of being able to personalize with kids who are just learning to read, write and compute. It has always been a struggle to be able to differentiate the difference between true personalized learning vs. differentiation and individualization. You have done a beautiful job of creating a chart that makes this clearer for all stakeholders. This chart will be useful for helping colleagues, administration and parents see the true definition of personalized learning and the potential that it holds.

How does learning begin, make sense and become authentic and relevant through their eyes?"
