What would schools look like if they were designed around the needs of students? "Susan Yonezawa, Larry McClure, and Makeba Jones evaluate formal attempts to personalize U.S. secondary education and assess the research on teacher-student relationships and their impact. With a focus on programs for low-income and minority youth, the authors examine school reforms that have incorporated personalization. To improve student achievement and emotional well-being significantly, they conclude, increasing personalization must be the goal of a widespread, sustained organizational effort."

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Don't miss this key paper on educational assessment!

There is a growing consensus that college and career readiness depends on not just academic knowledge and skills but on a wide range of social and developmental competencies, as well—such as the ability to monitor one’s own learning, persist at challenging tasks, solve complex problems, set realistic goals, and communicate effectively in many kinds of settings.

This is the first in Students at the Center’s new Deeper Learning Research Series—David T. Conley, well-known for his influential research on college readiness, argues that the time is ripe for a major shift in educational assessment.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

This infographic looks closely at the brain and it illustrates just how unique each learner's brain is as it is "shaped by continuous interaction of genetics and experience". They point out the importance of instructional strategies that meet the needs and interests of individual learners and that each learner needs to follow their own learning path to develop mastery. Understanding the neuroscience behind learning is critical if we want to develop effective student-centered learning environments where all learner's can achieve and succeed.

Lisa Desruisseaux's curator insight, March 29, 2013 11:01 AM

This infographic speaks to the importance of making those connections with and for our students. In other words, students need to know how they learn! When we personalize with students and teach them about their brain and how to learn, we are equipping them with tools for life-long success.

Students at the Center Project Explores How Students Learn Best

Students at the Center Project Explores How Students Learn Best | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The Students at the Center Project provides a set of reports that lay the foundation to understanding student-centered learning and it's promise for transforming education as we know it.  Here are just a few excerpts from reports that were recently released.

"Student-centered approaches to learning reject the one-size-fits-all instruction that can result from pressure to increase student scores on standardized tests. But they do not lower standards or ignore them. Rather, student-centered practices help teachers connect meaningfully with their students and individualize instruction to each, while also taking advantage of the social aspects of learning—adolescents’ propensities to collaborate with their peers. Capitalizing on the adaptability of the brain, student-centered approaches start from the premise that all students can learn when provided with instruction that truly engages them and adapts to their changing needs. All young people can acquire the skills, knowledge, and expertise needed for 21st-century college and career success. These include and go beyond the Common Core State Standards."
