Nikon A outclasses the rest of the high end compacts (X100s may be the exception). | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
DxOmark (Click here) published the full Nikon A sensor test results. The Nikon beats all other tested High End Compact cameras. But it has to be said the the brand new X100s hasn’t been tested yet. I guess the Fuji will outclass even the Nikon A.

DxOMark Camera Sensor Benchmark Explained

DxOMark Camera Sensor Benchmark Explained | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
DxOMark Camera Sensor is a raw benchmark for camera bodies by DxO Labs. The benchmark is “raw” because it measures image quality using Raw output files. It is also raw as DxO’s data can be used to cook up camera reviews that cover more aspects than image quality.

If you only want to compare a few specific cameras, the original data on DxOMark’s website should be perfectly adequate – although I still suggest browsing all the pictures in this article. However, if you want a deeper understanding of what the DxOMark scores really mean, if you care about tradeoffs in camera design or are wondering about major industry trends like “mirrorless” and small high quality cameras, this article might be of some use.

This article hopes to bridge the gap between scientific publications about camera sensor design (which are quite inaccessible for photographers) and consumer-oriented camera reviews. I have tried to maintain some degree of readability by including lots of diagrams, by mentioning examples, by moving details to endnotes and by adding some actual sample photos.

The Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D review

The Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

DxOMark continues its study of Nikon’s vintage AF-D Nikkor series, this time focusing on the 35mm f/2.
Photographers enjoy shooting with this lens because of its versatility and its very light weight. Mounted on a full-frame camera, this wide-angle’s field of view is the equivalent of a 53mm lens mounted on a Nikon APS-C (such as the D7000).
Let’s take a look at its performance results and then let’s compare it with the latest Nikon 35mm.

DxOMark - A look at the Panasonic Lumix DMC GF3 and its rivals

DxOMark - A look at the Panasonic Lumix DMC GF3 and its rivals | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Announced in June 2011, the Panasonic Lumix DMC GF3 will be of interest to photographers who can afford an easy-to-use compact camera with interchangeable lenses and an image quality superior to that of other compact cameras (such as the Canon Powershot S100).
Interestingly enough, the Lumix DMC GF3 was announced at the same time as two other cameras targeting the same category of photographer — the Pentax Q and the Olympus PEN EPM1. Let’s turn to the DxOMark database to see how these three cameras compare."

DxOMark - Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM II Canon: Test results

DxOMark - Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM II Canon: Test results | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"This new Sigma 12-24mm EX DG HSM II wide-angle zoom for full-frame cameras is a somewhat improved version of the previous lens, the solidly-built Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG Canon.
Let’s start off by taking a look at how these two lenses compare when mounted on a Canon 5D Mark II body:

The most striking improvement for the EX DG HSM II is with respect to chromatic aberration, thanks to the use of FLD (“F” low dispersion) glass, specially formulated to simulate the transmission properties of fluorite glass (i.e., lower refractive index and dispersion as compared to other optical glass). There is marked suppression of chromatic aberration at 12mm, particularly in the image center, and at 24mm, chromatic aberrations completely disappear.
Vignetting, transmission, and resolution for the HSM II also show improvement over the earlier EX DG lens, but nowhere near as dramatic:

  • For vignetting, there is a net improvement at the 12mm focal length (e.g., f/4.5-5.6), and an overall improvement at all focal lengths from f/8 onwards.
  • Transmission results remain low for both lenses, with a scarcely-worth-mentioning improvement of only 0.2 stop for the HSM II.
  • For resolution, the HSM II generally better in the center and worse on the edges (for example, at 17mm, f/5).

One surprise, however, is that the HSM II scores worse for distortion than its predecessor. For both lenses, distortion is visible at 12mm, but negligible at higher focal lengths.
Although the EX DG HSM II’s DxOMark overall score (11) beats the EX DG’s score (10), obviously the improvements are not so significant as to induce EX DG owners to run out and replace their old lens with the newer model. For photographers looking for a wide-angle zoom and trying to decide between the HSM II and the EX DG, it is not clear that the improvements to the newer model are worth the more than 50% markup in price over the previous version."

DxOmark test: Nikon sensors as good as Micro Four Thirds sensors!

DxOmark test: Nikon sensors as good as Micro Four Thirds sensors! | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Looking at the images samples floating around the web almost nobody believed the Nikon J1 and V1 sensor could be as good as the bigger Micro Four Thirds sensors. And here comes the latest DxOmark test and tells you exactly the opposite story. According to their tests the sensor of the J1 is exactly as good as the latest 16 Megapixel sensor of the Panasonic G3 and better than the rest of the Micro Four Thirds cameras. Color depth and landscape is slightly better than the G3 and only at High-ISO Micro Four Thirds has a visible advantage. Anyway, Sony still has by far the best sensor of all Mirrorless cameras. The NEX-C3 has 17 more points than the J1 and I bet the new Sony NEX-5n is even better!"

Nikon D800: The best sensor analyzed on DxOMark!

Nikon D800: The best sensor analyzed on DxOMark! | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"The two Nikon full-frame cameras, the D800 and the D4, occupy the top two places in the full-frame category. Simple and efficient. Still, be careful: as ever, in this review we are discussing only the D800’s RAW-image-based sensor results. We will follow up with DxOMark results for compatible lenses for this camera whose small pixel size promises to be very challenging.
Returning to the sensor, the D800’s Overall score is the best that has ever been achieved, and its use case scores are equally impressive..."

DxOMark - Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM measurements and review

DxOMark - Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM measurements and review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"The Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM which belongs to the high-end L series of Canon is designed for high performance. Its 13 elements in 10 groups include two aspherical elements for limited the distortion and two UD glass elements to minimize the chromatic aberration. It also features “Sub Wavelength structure Coating” for reduced flare and ghosting and a floating focus mechanism to maintain the same image quality across the whole focus range.

But, how does it really perform?

The best to benchmark the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM is to compare it with its excellent Nikon equivalent, the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED.

  • Both lenses have very similar transmission and distortion with a slight advantage for the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM
  • The resolution of both lenses is also very similar, even if they both have their own weaknesses: the Canon is excellent at F/4 but less good at F/1.4. And, the Nikon, even if it is more homogenous, is really at its best above F/5.6
  • Vignetting really is the weak point of the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM down to -3 EV at F/1.4.
  • Both lenses keep the chromatic aberration really low, with a small advantage for the Canon lens.

Overall, both these lenses are the very best for landscape photography with a Use Case score of 4.5 stars."
