Tokina has announced it will be exhibiting two soon-to-be-released lenses at the CP+ trade show in Japan. The AT-X 70-200 F4 PRO FX VCM-S is a telephoto zoom that's designed for use on both full frame and APS-C SLRs, and features both optical image stabilisation and a ring-type ultrasonic autofocus motor with full-time manual override. Meanwhile the AT-X 12-28 F4 PRO DX is a replacement for the company's existing 12-24mm F4 wideangle zoom for APS-C cameras. But rather than making the lens wider to match its competitors, Tokina has chosen to extend it further into the 'normal' range, to give an 18-42mm equivalent zoom.
The 70-200mm F4 was first shown as a mock-up at CP+ last year (click here for link). It appears that the version on display this year is fully-working, and will be released to the market soon. There's no information yet on pricing and availability, or even which mounts the lenses will be made for (historically Tokina has produced lenses in Canon and Nikon versions, and most recently the 11-16mm F2.8 in Sony fit too).
Photokina 2012: Sigma has announced it will brand its lenses in three categories and has introduced a new lens in each of the categories. The 'Contemporary' range will cover compact, flexible zooms, such as the new, smaller 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC OS Macro designed for APS-C DSLRs. The 'Art' range will include lenses such as primes, wide-angles and macros, and a new 35mm F1.4 DG HSM covering a full-frame imaging circle. Finally, the 'Sports' range will encompass Sigma's telephoto primes, telephoto zooms and superzooms, such as the new 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM.
Nikon Japan has already listed the previosuly rumored Nikkor 800mm f/5.6 lens on their website. There is not much information except that the new lens will be on display during the The 141st Open Championship golf tournament (July 19-22, 2012) and Photokina (September 2012).
"Schneider Kreuznach has said it will begin making lenses for mirrorless systems, and has shown renderings of a 14mm F2.0 lens for the Micro Four Thirds system. The move will make Schneider one of the few independent lens makers building autofocus lenses for mirrorless systems, following the launches of lenses for Micro Four Thirds and Sony NEX from Sigma and a NEX 18-200mm from Tamron. As part of its annual review, Schneider says it will introduce a range of lenses for mirrorless cameras 'this fall,' which we're expecting to mean around the Photokina show in Cologne, this September."
"Nikon has launched the AF-S Nikkor 18-300mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR lens, a 16.7x superzoom for APS-C DSLRs. The 18-300mm offers the highest ever zoom ratio for a Nikon interchangeable lens, giving a 27-450mm equivalent range on one of the company's DX-format cameras. The lens is a much more complex design than the existing 18-200mm - utilizing 19 elements in 14 groups and, at 120mm long, is 23% longer. It features a 77mm filter thread and will be available from June 2012 at a price of around $999."
"Canon has developed the EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40mm F2.8 STM lenses with stepper motors for fast, quiet operation when shooting video. The 18-135mm STM is an extended standard zoom for APS-C DSLRs, while the 40mm STM is a pancake prime lens for full frame and APS-C cameras. Both lenses feature stepper motors, to enable fast, quiet focus, particularly with the contrast-detection method of autofocus used for live view and video. They also both have electromagnetic diaphragms - allowing smooth and accurate control over aperture for video shooting. The lenses will be available from late June 2012, with the 18-135mm STM costing $549 and the 40mm F2.8 STM costing $199."
"The Nikkor AF-S 28mm f/1.8G is a wide angle lens designed for Nikon's range of DX and full-frame FX-format DSLRs. Announced April 2012, it's the larger aperture sibling to the venerable Nikkor AF 28mm f2.8D from 1994. It can also be considered a cheaper alternative to the AF-S 24mm f/1.4G and AF-S 35mm f/1.4G"
"Our hands-on preview of the Olympus 75mm F1.8 for Micro Four Thirds. The 75mm is Olympus' premium grade portrait lens for the joint Olympus/Panasonic mirrorless system. We've had a pre-production example in the office for a couple of days and have prepared a hands-on preview, to which we'll add a samples gallery when the promised production example arrives."
"Leica has announced the APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH. The company is making grand claims for its latest standard-focal-length prime, which uses specially developed glass to create an apochromatic design to minimize chromatic aberrations. The lens was designed to match the specifications of the existing 50mm f/2 lens - a 1979 design that is the oldest in the company's current lineup. The APO version of the lens will be available from late July 2012 at a cost of around $7,195."
Photographer Joe Adams was not happy that his old Minolta lenses did not fit hos new Nikon D5000. He fixed that using some duct tape and a coffee mixer. Can anything be simpler?
"The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED DX VR lens leaked on Nikon Europe website today. This lens has been on my list of upcoming announcements for few months now."
Canon has introduced the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x - a top-end telephoto zoom with a built-in switchable teleconverter, whose development was first announced back in February 2011.
Pentax Ricoh has announced the Pentax DA 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 ED SDM superzoom and a the HD Pentax DA 560mm F5.6 ED super-telephoto prime. The 18-270mm offers a 15x superzoom covering a 27.5-414mm equivalent range and is based around the company's SDM 'supersonic AF' motor. Meanwhile the 560mm F5.6 becomes the first Pentax lens to be given its 'HD' coating which, the company says, denotes high performance. The 859mm equivalent super-telephoto lens is environmentally sealed, to match the performance of the company's higher-end DSLRs. The lenses will cost around $800 and $7,000 respectively.
Camera and cine lenses need to operate perfectly in extreme conditions, withstanding everything from scorching heat and bitter cold to sandstorms and severe vibrations. The video shows how Carl Zeiss researchers systematically submit lenses to extreme stresses in order to arrive at findings that can help in future lens design and development.
"Nikon has announced the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm F3.5-4.5G ED VR, a comparatively affordable, stabilized, variable aperture standard zoom lens for full frame cameras. It comes as Nikon celebrates the sale of the 70 millionth Nikkor lens since 1933, and the 30 millionth silent-wave motor lens since the system's introduction in 1996. It's hard not to interpret the announcement as lending weight to the rumors of an affordable full-frame body, since it's hard to imagine large numbers of D800 owners using a lens with a recommended price of $599 as their everyday lens."
"The thing is that our DSLRs take images with 2:3 ratio and if we crop them we lose quality. This is where anamorphic lenses come into play, anamorphic lenses stretch the image to capture widescreen images/footage on 2:3 sensors. Just like an anamorphic pinhole captures wide screen images on a 35mm film.
Here is the problem, anamorphic lenses are kinda rare and expensive. Used anamorphic projection lenses on the other hand are bearable..."
"Fast standard zoom lenses are certainly a hot spot in the product portfolios. So far this arena has been dominated by the original manufacturers although the third-party manufacturers tried to challenge the big boys every once in a while. Tamron did so as well with the SP 28-75mm f/2.8 XR but the lens had/has no differentiator other than its low pricing. As such it was popular among amateurs on a budget but it has been largely ignored by professionals. However, their latest offering is a different beast altogether - the Tamron AF 24-70mm f/2.8 SP Di USD VC. Other than matching the specs of competing products it has something unique - it is the first fast standard zoom lens featuring an image stabilizer (VC = Vibration Control). An ultrasonic AF (USD) as well as weather sealing are also part of the package. Obviously Tamron is pretty much convinced of the capabilities of their new baby because they do no longer want to compete by price - they are asking about 1100EUR/1300US$. Now this may still be "just" half the price of the new Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L II but it is a magnitude more expensive than the old Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR and it's certainly no budget item anymore."
Pentax has announced the DA 50mm f/1.8, an affordable telephoto prime lens for APS-C interchangeable lens cameras. The lens offers a 76.5mm equivalent field of view on the company's DSLRs or K-01 cameras.
"It was my great pleasure to make test images with the newly announced 28mm F1.8G lens. I’m all about the fast glass and the 28mm does not disappoint; it’s sharp and fast and significantly smaller, lighter and cheaper than the beautiful 24mm f1.4G lens, the widest of the very fast Nikon glass.
In the coming days I will upload more sample images taken with the lens, mostly at f1.8 or near to wide open with my D3s.
Sadly, I had to send it back but like many of you, I’ve got an order in for one...."
"Nikon has announced the AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.8 G, a fast wideangle lens for full frame SLRs such as the D800. It uses two aspherical elements in its 11 element / 9 group construction, along with Nano Crystal Coat to combat flare and ghosting. It can also be used on DX format cameras, giving a 42mm-equivalent 'normal' angle of view. It will be available from the end of May 2012 at a guggested retail price of $699.95."
"Carl Zeiss has announced two videography-orientated lenses to add to its CP.2 Compact Prime range, a 15mm and a 135mm. The lenses, to be unveiled at the NAB broadcast industry trade show in Las Vegas, are the CP.2 15mm T/2.9 and CP.2 135mm T/2.1. Both lenses are color-matched to allow consistency in footage shot with different lenses, and feature interchangeable mounts, allowing use with PL, EF, F, MFT and E mounts. The two lenses will be available in the fourth quarter of 2012 at an MSRP of €4,200 / US$5,700 (excluding VAT)."
