Linkedin finally arrive at the party with beautiful iPad app

Linkedin finally arrive at the party with beautiful iPad app | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The app is a massive improvement on the tablet experience and is packed full of the usual features you would expect from the world’s biggest business social netwok. I felt that the iPhone app was actually a huge improvement on using the badly designed clunky website and the app takes things even further as the perfect way of browsing the site while on the go....

As a recent graduate, I know that sometimes finding a job board is as hard as finding a job. In such an up and down economy people are becoming restless, so it’s important now more than ever that you’re looking in the right places when trying to find a job in PR.

8 uncommon pieces of advice for that first PR interview | Arik Hanson

8 uncommon pieces of advice for that first PR interview | Arik Hanson | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Last week I spoke to a PRSSA chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Really motivated and organized bunch, it seemed. Afterward, one of the young ladies introduced herself and said she'd be following up soon.

Her question: “I have my first interview in a couple weeks for a PR internship–do you have any advice?”

As I thought about that, I considered the obvious tips. Research the company. Know the dress code. You know the tips. We’ve all heard them before (and if you haven’t, be sure to follow our quarterly HAPPO chats for more).

But, what about those tips that fly beneath the radar?...

Are you too smart to work in PR?

Are you too smart to work in PR? | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
“For decades a stream of bright young men and women, most of them with college degrees ranging from B.S. to Ph.D., have been coming to my office to ask me and my wife how to enter the profession ...

It seems there was real encouragement for those with intellectual capability to work in public relations. Indeed, Bernays saw public relations practitioners as a bridge between thinkers and doers. But I’m beginning to believe the majority of modern practitioners view PR as a non-intellectual trade, where craft skills count most, along with a friendly personality and a preference to spend time churning out releases and Tweets rather than thinking about anything more important they should be doing....

If you’re a PR job hunter, I’ll save you a lot of time. Most monster job sites aren’t worth it. They simply give too many unrelated or irrelevant jobs when searching for public relations job openings.

The Age of Social Learning - Eight Trends for Business | Hypertext

The Age of Social Learning - Eight Trends for Business | Hypertext | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
At a recent HR executive networking group, several trends in social learning resonated with me based on my own needs as a business learner, as well as trends across our PR consultants.

My attention was caught in particular by the statistic that people learn 70% through job experience, 20% from others and 10% from course learning and reading. However, on average, companies focus 70% of their training resources on course learning and reading. Couple this with the following trends in how people want and need information, and a compelling argument is made for focusing more energy and resources on connecting people rather than developing another half day training course....

The new baseline skill set | yelvington.com | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

I was looking at a couple of recent job postings at our newspapers and it occurs to me that the baseline skill set has quietly shifted. Students and veterans alike should take notice:

Be prepared to work in multiple media, simultaneously. We're digital-first, but we still print.

Be prepared to blog and interact with the public. As a writer, this means you need to develop a distinct voice, and know when and how to use it. Not everybody gets a blog at first, but you should want one -- and know why you want one....
