Why revolution is not a conspiracy - The News International | real utopias | Scoop.it

Without such popular support for a radical restructuring of state and society from below, insurrections will remain conspiracies at worst and coup d’états at best. In either case, the revolutionary objectives will not be met.

What kind of revolution? - Daily Times

The word “revolution” has been derived from the Latin word revolutio, meaning “a turnaround”, is a fundamental change in power or organisational structure that takes place in a relatively short period of time. The Greek philosopher Aristotle, in Politics Book V, explains that there are two types of political revolution: the first is a complete change from one constitution to another constitution and the second is modifications leading to reforms, which in plain words means reforming the existing constitution into a more precise political system. Early scholarly debates and analysis of events in European history from the psychological perceptive and more modern, advanced scholarly debates have considered political science, economic science and social science as well. Over a period of 300 years, scholarly debates have simplified the complexity related to revolution.

Revolution and the modern Islamist movement | Kung Fu Paindoos

Last week I parted on the statement that while a secular revolution is not possible in Pakistan, neither is a religious revolution since “this country is [also] devoid of a genuine Islamic intellectual tradition”. My editor, Najam Sethi, has decided to hold me to that. “The next article should explain why you think that an Islamic ‘revolution’ or ‘insurrection’ would also necessarily require an Islamic ‘intellectual’ tradition or input which is not available here,” he wrote me. So here goes.

During a recent political seminar, a leader of the Palestinian Left, whom I respect, spoke about the political, social and economic challenges facing the Palestinian people. In concluding his presentation, he stressed the need to protect the Palestinian national rights, strengthen popular resistance, address poverty and unemployment, support marginalised groups and promote economic and social development - including, of course, freedom of women and support for the private sector.

December 1, marks the tenth death anniversary of the late Hamza Alavi. My reflections for this piece will chiefly consist of my memories of my lone meeting with him in the last years of his life, before reflecting a bit on how that meeting changed me both professionally and politically, and concluding with the relevance of his work for our own times, chiefly Pakistan.
