In the letter below, Zizek sends what would become his first in an exchange of letters that would span from August 2012 to March 2014 with Nadya Tolokonnikova. Dated August 26, 2012, the letter was written 2 months after Nadya and her band mates were formally charged in Russia for their “Punk Prayer” protest.

Back when I first inherited this column my junior year, I followed up my inagural article with a commentary on the Russian band Pussy Riot after two of its musicians had been convicted of “hooliganism.” Desperate to make an original opinion on a controversial issue, I took on the devil’s advocate to some degree, asking if perhaps the band members were entirely blameless. It was naiveté at its finest, and with recent news of the band coupled with the ongoing Sochi Olympics, I wanted to revisit the issue at this tail end of my tenure as music columnist for the Daily.

For singing a "punk prayer" against Vladimir Putin in the cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, Nadia Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, of the collective Pussy Riot, were sentenced in August 2012 to two years' detention in a "prison colony" for "vandalism motivated by religious hate". After having denounced the inhuman prison conditions and begun a hunger strike, Tolokonnikova, 24, mother of a five-year-old girl, was transferred 4,000 kilometres from Mordovia to the Krasnoyarsk region in Siberia (Nadezhda Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot's prison letters to Slavoj Žižek, 16 November).
