International Day of Cooperatives - Nigerian Tribune

COOPERATIVE societies play an increasingly important part in the economic life of many countries. Cooperation has existed ever since the early human beings discovered that working together, they could accomplish their tasks much more easily and effectively. Thus the historical foundations of modern cooperatives can be traced to the ancient Egypt and Babylon, the ancient China, the Roman Empire, the activities of the Aztecs in South America before the Spanish advent and conquest, and those of the American Indians as well as to the traditional African notion of working together for mutual benefits.

It is so depressing that the Co-op lost its way so badly - Herald Scotland

It is so depressing that the Co-op lost its way so badly - Herald Scotland | real utopias | Scoop.it

Not so long ago in these columns, I sang the praises of the Co-operative Bank for staying mutual and avoiding the financial crises that had afflicted other banks through greed, stupidity and dodgy property deals. The ethical bank has suffered a financial crisis through, er, greed, stupidity and dodgy property deals. It is set to post £2bn losses, according to reports, one of the largest annual losses banking history. The Co-op will have to undergo another asset fire-sale. It is hard to see how the co-operative philosophy can survive.

The Alternative American Dream: Inclusive Capitalism

The Alternative American Dream: Inclusive Capitalism | real utopias | Scoop.it

Most people don't know it, but today there are over 19,000 companies that collectively employ over 25 million workers that fit under a broad definition of employee ownership. That figure comprises nearly 16 percent of the American workforce. A related statistic from the University of Chicago's General Social Survey reports that about 18 percent of those who work for companies in this country own stock in their companies. This is progress of sufficient measure to qualify for a compelling new label put forward by the Washington, D.C.-based think tank, the Center for American Progress. In a recent policy paper called "Growing the Wealth," they refer to these trends as constituting "inclusive capitalism."
