Why the CWI Russian section does not suit us | Марксистская группа 21 | real utopias | Scoop.it

Disagreements in the CWI RS began two years ago. Following weeks of arguments, disagreeing comrades (about half of the section) created a faction. For a short time the faction took the leadership of the section, but for simplicity we shall use the term leaders for those who remained in CWI, and the term faction for those who left.

Meeting Liverpool socialist Derek Hatton after hating him for 30 years

Meeting Liverpool socialist Derek Hatton after hating him for 30 years | real utopias | Scoop.it
Derek Hatton has just speared the yolk of an egg with his fork, and is watching it ooze over a plate of chargrilled asparagus. The former Militant leader, poster boy of 1980s socialism, is talking about his old enemy Neil Kinnock, who drummed him both out of office in Liverpool and out of the Labour Party. “Luckily I’m the sort of person in life who doesn’t bear grudges. I’ve always felt if you’ve got a grudge with somebody, either they don’t know you’ve got a grudge on them, or they don’t care.

Socialism and National Rights in Ukraine, Israel/Palestine and Other Countries - Socialist Alternative

Socialism and National Rights in Ukraine, Israel/Palestine and Other Countries - Socialist Alternative | real utopias | Scoop.it

The bloody conflict in Ukraine, alongside the slaughter of the Palestinian people in Gaza, has brought the issue of the ‘national question’ once more forcefully onto the political agenda. How can we open a road to begin to solve seemingly age-old intractable issues? This is the question which is sharply posed for the workers’ movement, firstly in the regions immediately affected by war, but also for the international labour movement. PETER TAAFFE writes.

Socialist Alternative Growing Rapidly - Socialist Alternative

Socialist Alternative Growing Rapidly - Socialist Alternative | real utopias | Scoop.it

Kshama Sawant’s election victory has received repeated national media attention, helping to revive interest in socialist ideas and establishing Socialist Alternative as a pole of attraction for workers and youth looking to get active in the struggle against capitalist crisis. Since November, our work has been covered regularly by Seattle media and has also been featured in MSNBC, The Washington PostThe Nation, and even on the front page of The New York Times.

40 years of the Committee for a Workers' International - Socialist Party

40 years of the Committee for a Workers' International - Socialist Party | real utopias | Scoop.it
International solidarity is a vital aspect of the struggle for socialism. The Socialist Party fights for a world free of poverty, war and inequality. But that requires more than just supporting workers in struggle in other countries, important though that is. We need to build a powerful international organisation, capable of helping the working class to replace the capitalist system with democratic socialism. To aid this task the Committee for a Workers' International (CWI) was founded at a meeting of 46 comrades from 12 countries on 21 April 1974. Today it spans 48 countries on every continent.

Occupy Tastes Rare Success in Rise of Seattle Socialist - Bloomberg | real utopias | Scoop.it

The Tea Party feted its five-year anniversary last month with three U.S. senators it helped elect, two of them presidential contenders. Now Occupy Wall Street, the other populist movement to emerge from the financial crisis, can claim electoral success: a Seattle city council member.

“We have described BW as holding a “fundamentalist” and “dogmatic” interpretation of Marx’s ideas. In other words of adhering to the word – while ignoring a raft of text in Marx’s writings that undermine BW’s position – but not the method of Marx. We have also accused BW of drawing ultra-left programmatic and tactical conclusions that would do great damage to our party if we were to adopt his position in the trade union and wider working class movement.”
