Argentina. RR Donnelley: workers occupied the factory to put it into production against the illegal closure of the multinational company’s factory | real utopias | Scoop.it

(Garín district, Buenos Aires, 12/8/14). Trade union delegate Jorge Medina said: “after closing its plant in the Garín district of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, in a totally illegal fashion, leaving more than 400 families on the street, and that the Ministry of Labour confirmed that the company is breaching the ruling of the court that ordered both sides to have (compulsory) arbitration to resolve the labour dispute, the shop stewards’ committee and workers at R.R. Donnelley have resolved in an assembly to occupy the factory and begin production, in order to defend the 400 jobs. The workers denounce this closure as illegal and we are not going to be intimidated. We demand the immediate re-opening of the plant under the same working conditions, number of workers and salaries. If the company alleges that it is in bankruptcy we will begin production.

It’s 6 a.m. in Chicago, and the bitingly cold, drizzly weather seems oblivious to the fact that it’s May 15th. And yet, a crowd of more than 100 people wearing red ponchos has formed outside of a McDonald’s restaurant downtown, where they’re dancing to mariachi music.

Belgium: Class trade unionism seeks political expression - Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal

Belgium: Class trade unionism seeks political expression - Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal | real utopias | Scoop.it

October 17, 2013 -- International Viewpoint -- In the social and political history of Belgium, May 1, 2012, could mark a milestone. On that day the leaders of the Charleroi regional branch of the socialist trade union General Federation of Belgian Labour (Fédération Générale du Travail de Belgique/Algemeen Belgisch Vakverbond, FGTB/ABVV) — the second biggest in the country, with 102,000 members — publicly broke with the social-democratic party and called for a rallying of the left to the perspective of a new broad, anti-capitalist force to the left of the Parti Socialiste (PS) and the Greens. An unprecedented thunderbolt… and not without consequences.

Turkey's Revolutionary Conundrum - NEWS JUNKIE POST

Turkey's Revolutionary Conundrum - NEWS JUNKIE POST | real utopias | Scoop.it

To characterize the current struggle in Turkey as being a clash of secularism versus Islam — that is, a conflict between the secular demands of the urban Turkish population and the pro-Islamic social conservative forces led by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) — is dangerous. This not only reinforces a western orientalist perception of followers of Islam as being inherently irrational and despotic, but also simplifies the issue while failing to address the greater, complex, and more fundamental flaws in the Turkish political landscape. True, the social conservative and Islamic-inspired policies of Mr. Erdogan have added to the outrage of protesters and a general public who regard the current government as being exceptionally authoritarian. To limit oneself to this rhetoric, however, provides an incomplete narrative.
