Data are the lifeblood of decision-making, and the raw material for accountability. Without data, we cannot know how many people are born and die; how many men and women still live in poverty; how many children need educating, and how many teachers to train or schools to build; the prevalence and incidence of diseases; if water is polluted or if the fish stocks in the ocean are dangerously low; how many adolescent girls are getting pregnant and what policies are effective in helping them; what companies are trading and whether demand for their product is expanding.

The worldwide movement toward sustainability has numerous actors, many seemingly at odds, yet with at least some similar aims. Last week’s blog covered community- and incentives-based programs discussed at the Fuller Science for Nature Symposium on communities and conservation around the globe that was held in Washington, DC on November 13th. This week, I examine global activists and big corporations, players that act with a global scope in mind. While activists occupy a lofty realm guided by a pure morality, corporations are pragmatic and self-interested. Yet the contributions of both are needed for the planet to have any hope of developing toward a sustainable future. While heterogeneous, many of the symposium’s presentations discussed the need for local activism, global thinking, and the precarious balance between the two. If anything, the overall symposium leaned in favor of the local, of multiple individual actors doing the right thing and learning from each other, without the need for strong global governance mechanisms. The effect is that of an orchestra of skilled musicians, improvising, responding, and learning from each other, yet without any sort of conductor arranging the various parts, from governments to NGOs to activists to corporations.

Europe is badly in need of a new mobilizing project that maps out a bold vision for the future, and forms a pact with citizens on how to get there. The transition to a sustainable society/is/ that project, and, unlike the creation of the internal market and the single currency, this is a project that should aim not only to change Europe, but to change the way the EU governs in the process.

With a few exceptions, national governments aren't going to make a big dent in climate change and associated environmental problems. They're too big, slow, and in many cases, don't even want to acknowledge a problem that's so politically inconvenient. Over the past half decade or so, it has become increasingly apparent that cities are leading the way--and ultimately, have the greatest chance at boosting our chances for survival in the face of declining resources and rising seas.

I have ambiguous feelings about this list. Although some of these men and women are my personal heroes too, I wonder whether we should really celebrate individuals as "stars". Is this not the logic we should be fighting? Where is the role of the social movement? Via Willy De Backer
