Does Gael Monfils do any kind of win other than extraordinary? His exhilarating second-round encounter with Ernests Gulbis would surely have belonged to the Latvian if he had won either the second or the third sets; but Monfils somehow snatched the second and insisted upon the third. He needed seven set points to secure the latter, and was sufficiently chilled to spend the changeover filming the crowd on his mobile phone. Eventually the son of Paris emerged a thrilled and thrilling winner 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-2 in three hours and 15 minutes, having demonstrated once and for all how to put the wild into wildcard.

What should have been a straightforward opening match for Ana Ivanovic became a huge tussle, before the 2008 Roland Garros champion surged back to beat Petra Martic 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 on Philippe Chatrier Court. Martic, the world No.107, threatened to take control of the match but could not sustain the form which took her to the fourth round last year.

Milos Raonic is finally finding his feet on red clay and if the young Canadian can continue to be as resourceful as he was in dispatching the hard-charging Michael Llodra of France 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 in the second round, he will be tough to stop in the rest of the tournament.
