French archaeologists have discovered an extremely rare example of a neolithic "earth mother" figurine on the banks of the river Somme.

This 6,000 year old figurine was found by the banks of Somme. The figurine depicts a woman and has taken on the name of "Lady of Villers-Carbonne". Some Neolithic experts guess that it is a figurine of a fertility goddess. The find was rare since most Neolithic findings have been found in Southern Europe while this was discovered in Northern Europe. |

Depressed people react more strongly to photos of their mother than healthy individuals, according to new research. When individuals diagnosed with depression were placed in fMRI machines and shown photos of mom, scientists saw stronger reactions in the left anterior paracingulate gyrus, a brain area that plays an important role in the regulation of social emotion. Images of other family members provoked smaller responses. The technique may provide scientists with an important diagnostic tool.

Changes in a mother's psychological state before and after she gives birth may affect her baby. If a mother's mood changes — from either depressed to healthy or healthy to depressed — babies do less well on tests of mental development.
