Overall, because there are more ill-educated people than educated ones, religious attendance has a beneficial effect. But the benefit really accrues to the ill-educated. For the educated, religion (at least, the kind of religion widely practised in the USA) might actually be harmful.

This can be compared to the fact that some religions rely on spiritual healings, while others allow medication. The smaller, more ethnic religions in places with less sanitation/health benefits (LDCs, for example) happen to have more health problems. When it comes to universalizing religions as a choice in both LDCs and MDCs, it seems that there is a rise in health conditions.

By washing the hands, taking a shower, or even thinking of doing so, "people can rid themselves of a sense of immorality, lucky or unlucky feelings, or doubt about a decision. The bodily experience of removing physical residues can provide the basis of removing more abstract mental residues."
