New type of graphene-based transistor will increase the clock speed of processors

New type of graphene-based transistor will increase the clock speed of processors | Sciences & Technology | Scoop.it

"Scientists have developed a new type of graphene-based transistor and modeling demonstrates that it has ultralow power consumption compared with other similar transistor devices. The findings have been published in a paper in the journal Scientific Reports. The most important effect of reducing power consumption is that it enables increased processor clock speeds—according to calculations, as much as two orders of magnitude higher..."

Laser pulses used to track motion of electrons in metals with attosecond precision

Laser pulses used to track motion of electrons in metals with attosecond precision | Sciences & Technology | Scoop.it

"It is easy to measure electric current. But it is extremely hard to watch the individual electrons which make up this current. Electrons race through the metal with a speed of several million meters per second, and the distance they have to cover between two adjacent atoms is very small. This means that tiny time intervals have to be resolved in order to watch the electrons dashing through the metal.

Measurements in Garching (Germany) and theoretical calculations at the Vienna University of Technology (Austria) have now made this possible. As it turns out, the motion of the electrons in the metal is remarkably similar to ballistic motion in free space. The results have now been published in the journal Nature..."

Germanene: a novel two-dimensional germanium allotrope akin to graphene and silicene - IOPscience

Germanene: a novel two-dimensional germanium allotrope akin to graphene and silicene - IOPscience | Sciences & Technology | Scoop.it

"We have grown an atom-thin, ordered, two-dimensional multi-phase film in situ through germanium molecular beam epitaxy using a gold (111) surface as a substrate. (...)

After the successful synthesis of silicene in 2012, which was followed by a surge of studies on elemental, novel two-dimensional (2D) materials beyond graphene, a daunting quest was to obtain germanene, the germanium-based analogue of graphene, already predicted to possibly exist in 2009. Although its fully hydrogenated form, germanane, was fabricated using a wet chemistry method in 2013, germanene has remained elusive. Here we show compelling experimental and theoretical evidence of its synthesis by dry epitaxial growth on a gold (111) surface. (...)"

Transparent, flexible supercapacitors pave the way for a multitude of applications

Transparent, flexible supercapacitors pave the way for a multitude of applications | Sciences & Technology | Scoop.it
"The standard appearance of today's electronic devices as solid, black objects could one day change completely as researchers make electronic components that are transparent and flexible. Working toward this goal, researchers in a new study have developed transparent, flexible supercapacitors made of carbon nanotube films. The high-performance devices could one day be used to store energy for everything from wearable electronics to photovoltaics..."
