Microsoft and partners fight back against the ZeroAccess botnet | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Microsoft, in conjunction with Europol and the FBI, have successfully taken down the click fraud servers used by ZeroAccess, disrupting one of the world's largest and most resilient botnets.

In the meantime though we should give praise to Microsoft and its crime busting partners for the serious blow they have landed on a difficult opponent.

Unless Microsoft or Europol can identify the 'John Does 1-8' mentioned in the court documents then we can expect ZeroAccess to resurface in the near future.

ZeroAccess, also known as the Sirefef botnet, is believed to have infected more than 9 million computers worldwide.

Always be wary of software which seems to be too good to be true. It may well be trying to make money at your expense.

Hopefully other anti-virus vendors will follow MalwareBytes’s lead and add detection of this potentially unwanted application, as I cannot imagine many people wanting their computer’s performance to be halved because it is secretly making money for someone else.

Schneier on Security: The FBI Might Do More Domestic Surveillance than the NSA

Schneier on Security: The FBI Might Do More Domestic Surveillance than the NSA | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

November 26, 2013

The FBI Might Do More Domestic Surveillance than the NSA

This is a long article about the FBI's Data Intercept Technology Unit (DITU), which is basically its own internal NSA.

It carries out its own signals intelligence operations and is trying to collect huge amounts of email and Internet data from U.S. companies -- an operation that the NSA once conducted, was reprimanded for, and says it abandoned.

[...]

The unit works closely with the "big three" U.S. telecommunications companies -- AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint -- to ensure its ability to intercept the telephone and Internet communications of its domestic targets, as well as the NSA's ability to intercept electronic communications transiting through the United States on fiber-optic cables.

[...]

After Prism was disclosed in the Washington Post and the Guardian, some technology company executives claimed they knew nothing about a collection program run by the NSA. And that may have been true. The companies would likely have interacted only with officials from the DITU and others in the FBI and the Justice Department, said sources who have worked with the unit to implement surveillance orders.

[...]

Bitcointhemed malware rising sharply

Bitcointhemed malware rising sharply | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Experts are warning users to expect a steep rise in Bitcointhemed malware attacks following discovery of a new virus called Bitcoin Alarm

The latest virus is based on spam emails that take users to a website called bitcoin-alarm.net. This promises them a Windows app that will send them the latest Bitcoin prices via SMS. But the download contains a Trojan which Arbor research analyst Kenny MacDermid, who discovered the malware, said is designed for stealing login information, and is likely in this case being used to steal Bitcoins.

Bitcoin Thefts Surge, DDoS Hackers Take Millions | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Cryptographic currency's massive rise in value leads to a corresponding increase in online heists by criminals seeking easy paydays.

Bitcoin users have echoed that suggestion. "One note of warning: don't trust any online wallet," read a comment on a recent Guardian feature. "The two biggest ones have already been robbed. Use your own wallet on your own computer and back it up on a USB stick."

"Remember, you don't have to keep your Bitcoins online with someone else: you can store your Bitcoins yourself, encrypted and offline," said Ducklin at Sophos.
