The Feds Cut a Deal With In-Flight Wi-Fi Providers, and Privacy Groups Are Worried

The Feds Cut a Deal With In-Flight Wi-Fi Providers, and Privacy Groups Are Worried | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Gogo, the inflight Wi-Fi provider, is used by millions of airline passengers each year to stay connected while flying the friendly skies. But if you think the long arm of government surveillance doesn't have a vertical reach, think again.

According to a letter Gogo submitted to the Federal Communications Commission, the company voluntarily exceeded the requirements of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, or CALEA, by adding capabilities to its service at the request of law enforcement. The revelation alarms civil liberties groups, which say companies should not be cutting deals with the government that may enhance the ability to monitor or track users.

“CALEA itself is a massive infringement on user’s rights,” says Peter Eckersley of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “Having ISP’s [now] that say that CALEA isn’t enough, we’re going to be even more intrusive in what we collect on people is, honestly, scandalous.”

Gogo provides inflight Wi-Fi and digital entertainment to Delta, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, US Airways and others using a dedicated air-to-ground network that GoGo says it designed in consultation with law enforcement.

Use Android? You’re Probably Giving Google All Your Wifi Passwords

Use Android? You’re Probably Giving Google All Your Wifi Passwords | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

And the passwords are in plaintext, too. When you format an Android phone and set it up on first run, after you login to your Google account and restore your backup, it immediately connects to wifi using a saved password. There’s no sort of password hash that your Android phone could send your router to authenticate besides the password itself.

Oh, and Google is part of NSA’s Prism program. If an NSA analyst, or likely someone from CIA or even FBI (Prism is a “team sport”), asks Google for information about you, your house’s and office’s wifi passwords are likely included in that data. Without a warrant.

Firesheep addon allows the clueless to hack Facebook, Twitter over Wi-Fi

Firesheep addon allows the clueless to hack Facebook, Twitter over Wi-Fi | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
If you thought that capturing a user's social media session was only done by skilled hackers, now the Firesheep addon can allow even the truly clueless to become an Internet griefer.

Even if you were drunk and surfing at a Wi-Fi hotspot, you probably wouldn't stand up and shout your username and password for anyone who might want it. But an attacker does not need to find out your username and password. If you thought that capturing a user's social media session was only done by skilled hackers, now the Firesheep addon can allow even the truly clueless to become an Internet griefer.

If you were at a Wi-Fi hotspot, you probably would have no options and no encryption at all. Although many websites give lip service about how important their users' privacy and security is to them, very few have their entire site encrypted with HTTPS. Most sites encrypt the username and password during the login process, but most of those sites stop encrypting and protecting the user right there. As soon as a user moves on to a regular HTTP page on the site, an attacker can sniff and capture the user's cookie information.

Many of us are busy multitasking, so we log into Twitter or Facebook, or even Flickr, and then move on to surf other sites without first logging out of those accounts. If any of those future sites have a Twitter or Facebook widget, or even a Flickr image embedded, if you didn't log out of those sites before continuing to surf, then HTTP session jacking, also called "sidejacking," can happen and leak the user's cookie. Security researchers explained that if a person can steal the cookie, then they can steal your session and allow them to do anything the user could do on the site.

Scammers in a Wi-Fi Wonderland

Scammers in a Wi-Fi Wonderland | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

You’d better watch out, you’d better not cry—you’d better not use that public Wi-Fi. The holiday season is upon us and in addition to more flash sales, baked goods, and travel time—this meansmore online scams. A recent survey of American travelers revealed that the majority of us are not taking measures to protect ourselves when using public Wi-Fi. Numerous forms of malware can be delivered over unsecured connections, so when traveling for the holidays you’re more vulnerable than ever to a cyber break in.

That’s why on the road, in the air, or otherwise on the go this holiday season, it’s more important than ever that you watch where you connect.
