Research: Powerful cyber attack tools widely available

Research: Powerful cyber attack tools widely available | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
More low-level cyber criminals are getting access to sophisticated attack tools, say cyber intelligence specialists.

“Organisations must have a plan for dealing with infections and data breaches; they can’t just say this is an issue that doesn’t affect me. Any company that stores data is a potential target,” said Aharoni.

It is now in the open that countries are using malware as part of their cyber espionage programmes, and he believes companies should be planning their cyber security in light of that fact.

McAfee Labs Threat Report for Q1 2012: Threats Gone Wild

McAfee Labs Threat Report for Q1 2012: Threats Gone Wild | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

===> United States the Primary Source of Cyberattacks <===

A compromised machine is often used as a proxy for spam, botnets, denial of service, or other types of malicious activities. These machines can be located anywhere in the world, but this quarter many were located in the United States.

Based on data collected from the McAfee Global Threat Intelligence™ network, the United States was the primary source of SQL-injection attacks and cross-site scripting attacks, and also had the highest number of victims of both attacks.

===> The United States currently houses the most botnet control servers, and the location point for the vast majority of new malicious websites, with an average of 9,000 new bad sites recorded per day. <===

US: Cyber attacks on utilities, industries rise...

U.S. utilities and industries face a rising number of cyber break-ins by attackers using more sophisticated methods, a senior Homeland Security Department official said during the government's first media tour of secretive defense labs intended to protect the nation's power grid, water systems and other vulnerable infrastructure.

Acting DHS Deputy Undersecretary Greg Schaffer told reporters Thursday that the world's utilities and industries increasingly are becoming vulnerable as they wire their industrial machinery to the Internet.

"We are connecting equipment that has never been connected before to these global networks," Schaffer said. Disgruntled employees, hackers and perhaps foreign governments "are knocking on the doors of these systems, and there have been intrusions."

Olympic experts sure they can repel cyber threats

Olympic experts sure they can repel cyber threats | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

LONDON (AP) --- Vital computer systems for London’s 2012 Olympic Games have come under repeated cyber-attacks — but only from hackers who were invited to join in thousands of hours of security tests.

A quarter of the London Olympic organizing committee’s overall budget of $3.1 billion has been spent on technology. Atos is expecting to handle 2 million pieces of key data throughout the event — 30 percent more than at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

For hackers, a gold medal attack would be to light up Olympic scoreboards with politically-motivated messages, a feat Adiba says would be almost impossible to achieve.

“It is very unlikely, as it all operates on a very secure network. It would be quite complicated to get into this network without being detected,” he said. “I can never be 100 percent, but it is close to 100 percent.”
