Dorsey says Twitter is thinking about an edit button to fix typos in tweets | #SocialMedia | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

For the first time since the end of 2016, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey shed some light on the company’s thoughts about building an edit button for tweets. Speaking at an event in India’s capital of New Delhi, he said that the company has to carefully consider use cases for the edit button before making it a reality – and it could potentially be tooled to help fix typos.

“You have to pay attention to what are the use cases for the edit button. A lot of people want the edit button because they want to quickly fix a mistake they made. Like a misspelling or tweeting the wrong URL. That’s a lot more achievable than allowing people to edit any tweet all the way back in time,” Dorsey said.

Facebook acquires ID verification startup Confirm.io | #Acquisitions #SocialMedia | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
(Reuters) — Facebook Inc is buying a software firm that specializes in authenticating government-issued identification cards, the two companies said on Tuesday, a step that may help the social media company learn more about the people who buy ads on its network.

U.S. lawmakers have expressed alarm at Facebook’s limited ability to know who is buying advertisements, including election-related ads, on the world’s largest social network.

Boston-based Confirm Inc, which is privately held, said on its website that the acquisition was the culmination of three years of work to build technology to keep people safe online.

Facebook said in a statement Confirm’s “technology and expertise will support our ongoing efforts to keep our community safe.”

Terms of the deal and how Facebook would apply Confirm’s software were not revealed.

The role of social media in managing brand reputation crisis

The role of social media in managing brand reputation crisis | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

The now famous phrase – “knowledge is power “– coined centuries ago has been attributed to various speakers. However, if we wanted to adapt this saying for today, one could easily add “…and social media is God!” Like it or hate it, social media is a powerful tool that has changed the way the world communicates, creates, recreate, shares – or in some cases – withholds – knowledge. It can influence the rise or (more importantly) fall of empires, corporations and reputations.

Social media is far from being the bad kid on the block, though. It can be an invaluable ally to overcome brand reputation crisis and, most importantly, to prevent them. Speed, virility, ubiquity, easiness, is what makes it one of the main communication channels to manage crisis nowadays.
Many have learned the hard way that even the most risk-averse and cautious companies face reputation crisis. While all communication channels are relevant, the one where things happens fast and spread quicker is precisely social media. It’s more and more necessary to have a social-media-ready crisis communication strategy handy than facing a momentous problem without any battle plan.

We wanted this article to be your handy go-to reference to manage social media crisis where your company’s reputation is compromised. Let’s have a look at it!

Instagram launches IGTV, a new long-from video platform, hits 1 billion users | #SocialMedia | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

Instagram on Wednesday launched IGTV, a new long-from video platform that gives marketers another way to reach its vast audience -- which now stands at 1 billion users.

The new platform for content creators, which will be available as a standalone app and within Instagram, makes Instagram a more direct competitor with other digital media giants like YouTube as well as traditional media. It also gives Facebook, Instagram's parent company, a fresh channel for advertisers -- Instagram already accounts for a growing portion of Facebook's mobile ad revenue.

Calling IGTV its "most exciting feature to date," Instagram explained that videos on the app are fullscreen and vertical, optimized for watching on a smartphone. Each video can be up to an hour long. Anyone can post their own videos to IGTV via the app or the web and create their own "channel.

All the Changes Coming to Your Instagram | #SocialMedia | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

At Facebook’s F8 conference on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg discussed how Instagram will be changing in the coming weeks. The upgrades include video chat, an Explore redesign, AR camera effects, and a bullying filter.

The new video chat feature will allow users to talk with one or more people. “You’re going to be able to just tap on a new camera icon in the top of any direct thread that you have and you’re going to be able to video chat one-on-one or with groups,” Zuckerberg explained. The chat screen can be minimized so users can use the feature while also scrolling through Instagram.

Instagram is also rolling out a new Explore design that features categories so users can choose different topic channels—like “animals,” “nail art,” and “slime”—rather than just seeing content that Instagram thinks you’ll like.

Zuckerberg’s response to Cambridge scandal omits why it delayed investigating | #SocialMedia #Naivety #NobodyIsPerfect #ProactiveTHINKing  | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

I started Facebook, and at the end of the day I’m responsible for what happens on our platform” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted after days of the public and government officials waiting for him to speak up about the Cambridge Analytica scandal since it broke Friday. “We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you.”

Zuckerberg laid out a slate of changes Facebook will make to prevent past and future abuses of user data by app developers. Those include:

Blocking data access of apps you haven’t used for three months or more

Auditing old apps that collected a lot of personal data
Reducing the amount of data apps can pull using Facebook Login without an additional permissions screen to just your name, profile photo, and email address

Requiring a signed contract from developers that want to pull your posts or private information

Surfacing Facebook’s privacy third-party app privacy settings tool atop the News Feed to help people repeal access to apps

Telling people if their data was misued by the app associated with Cambridge Analytica, or apps Facebook bans for misue in the future.

What’s missing from this response is any indication why Facebook didn’t do more to enforce its policy prohibiting apps from sharing user data, or why it took Cambridge Analytica at their word when they said they deleted the data without proper investigation.

8 Tweet Ideas for Twitter's 280 Character Limit | #SocialMedia | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
Twitter’s 280 character limit has now been rolled out to everyone. In this post I’ll give you a few tweet ideas on how you can use the new update for your brand or business.

Personally, I really liked the 140 character limit, and after being in this industry for some time, I'd gotten good at chopping down long-form text to fit the platform's restrictions. I loved the challenge, and I also think it's been a big part of the appeal of Twitter - you know you're logging on to short thoughts and not long rants.
