Mastodon, which proudly proclaims it is “not for sale” and has around 4.5 million user accounts, is pretty similar to Twitter, once users get past the complicated sign-up process. The main difference is that it’s not one cohesive platform, but actually a collection of different, independently-run and self-funded servers. Users on different servers can still communicate with each other, but anybody can set up their own server, and set their own rules for discussion. Mastodon is a crowdfunded nonprofit, which funds the full-time work of Rochko—its sole employee—and several popular servers. Twitter ist vielleicht nicht der schönste Ort des Internets, aber einer der praktischsten: Man kann sich dort vernetzen. Es ist ein Ort für Diskussion und Austausch: Virologie, Cybersecurity, Wirtschaftspolitik. It’s been called Twitter Article before, but now the bird app’s long-form posts feature goes by Notes, and it’s officially being tested with a few users now.

Details about Donald Trump’s new social media app “Truth Social” are trickling out as about 500 beta testers have begun using an early version of the platform.
The former president announced his plans for the new social media platform in October, promising to rival the tech companies that banned him from their platforms after the Capitol insurrection.
His new media and technology venture, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), has pledged to deliver an “engaging and censorship-free experience” on the Truth Social app.
TMTG remains shrouded in secrecy and is regarded with skepticism by many in tech and media circles. Comments from beta testers this week suggest the platform bears a striking resemblance to Twitter. Six months ago, after the news broke that changes were coming to Twitter’s policies against disinformation and hate speech, I decided to give Mastodon a try. Unfortunately, I didn’t stick with the app long enough to develop a habit of using it. After returning to it once again this week, that’s something I’ve come to regret. In the few days since (mostly) ditching Twitter, I’ve gained a new respect for the platform, which is decidedly less toxic and is far more conversational and troll-free. I’m hoping this very brief guide will serve new users as well as those hearing about it for the first time. Twitter is going through some turmoil at the moment...to say the least. Ever since the new "Chief Twit" took over, many advertisers and popular users have fled from the app, seeking greener pastures. With the competition at its weakest, many Twitter alternatives have stepped up to take the popular app's place. Apps like Cohost, B-Heard, and CounterSocial are offering new, safer spaces for users afraid of what "free speech" looks like on Twitter, however, the app gaining the most buzz as of late is Mastodon. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly preparing to allow the posting of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on its social networks and the creation and trading of digital assets via a new marketplace.
The news comes from a Financial Times article citing anonymous sources with inside knowledge of the company's preliminary plans. According to "several people familiar with the matter," Facebook intends to begin allowing users to post NFTs as their profile images and to upload or "mint" their own NFTs via a prototype system that will generate the required tokens needed to turn a simple image file into this new form of digital asset.
Two of those same sources also claim Meta is planning its own marketplace for buying, selling, and trading NFTs. If true, this would place the company in direct competition with existing NFT trading outlets like OpenSea, which, as FT noted, just completed a $300 million investment round at a $13 billion valuation.
