The readers' editor on… the need for sensitive reporting of England's riots...
Some stories lumber down the track for months, announcing their approach with bells, whistles and a final ear-shattering fanfare: the 2012 Olympics is a case in point. Others appear to come out of nowhere, catching everyone – or nearly everyone – by surprise with devastating consequences.
The death of Mark Duggan, 29, on Wednesday 4 August at Tottenham Hale in north-east London, at the hands of a police firearm specialist, is in the second category.

The riots in the UK are spreading to other major cities.

While I wasn’t there for long enough to fully gauge the breadth of the aftermath of violence, the image I had vividly portrayed through friends and colleagues living in the various boroughs of London pictured a scene of decentralised chaos lacking any emotion of hate or frustration — more so anger. Pure, unadulterated anger.
The use of technology has been a focal point throughout these riots — with social media being blamed for inciting violence, and BlackBerry Messenger as a conduit for the perpetuation of the ongoing riots.

Hacktivism has surged this year, but it’s taking on a new role in the London riots.
lackBerry Messenger has been pinpointed as one of the main mediums that rioters in London have been using to communicate and, well, organize themselves, so to speak.
Now Research in Motion, as if they haven’t had a bad enough year already, is the caught in the middle.
RIM’s Inside BlackBerry blog was hacked into after the Canadian mobile phone maker agreed to cooperate and help British police forces. As of 9:30AM PT on Tuesday, the site was still down and just looked like a blank page.
