Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly preparing to allow the posting of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on its social networks and the creation and trading of digital assets via a new marketplace.
The news comes from a Financial Times article citing anonymous sources with inside knowledge of the company's preliminary plans. According to "several people familiar with the matter," Facebook intends to begin allowing users to post NFTs as their profile images and to upload or "mint" their own NFTs via a prototype system that will generate the required tokens needed to turn a simple image file into this new form of digital asset.
Two of those same sources also claim Meta is planning its own marketplace for buying, selling, and trading NFTs. If true, this would place the company in direct competition with existing NFT trading outlets like OpenSea, which, as FT noted, just completed a $300 million investment round at a $13 billion valuation. Facebook has joined forces with Coinbase on a new effort to create a digital wallet that allows people to send money internationally without any fees.
According to a letter from Facebook, Facebook's Novi, which has been in the works for years, will be running pilot programs in the US and Guatemala. Novi is available to anyone in the US except those living in Alaska, Nevada, New York and the US Virgin Islands.
The tool lets people send USDP -- a stablecoin pegged to the price of the US dollar -- which can then be withdrawn in a local currency. USDP is one of a number of cryptocurrencies pegged to the US dollar.

Twitter has begun testing the first of its proposed suite of new privacy tools: the ability to remove a follower without blocking them. The remove follower feature is currently being tested on the web and seems to canonize the “soft block” concept as an official Twitter tool.
According to the tweet announcing the test, you can remove followers from the follower list on your profile page. You just click the three-dot menu next to a follower’s name, click “Remove follower,” and your tweets will no longer automatically show up in their timeline. Schon seit längerem denkt Twitter darüber nach, zusätzliche Einnahmen durch ein Abo-Modell zu generieren. Nun bringt die Social-Media-Plattform Twitter Blue an den Start. Vorerst aber nur in Kanada und Australien. Die Bezahl-Version wartet mit einigen neuen Funktionen auf.
Twitter bringt seinen ersten kostenpflichtigen Abo-Service an den Start. Das Produkt namens Twitter Blue gibt es zunächst in Kanada und Australien und soll im Laufe der Zeit auch auf andere Märkte ausgedehnt werden, teilte Twitter mit. Die Kosten für den Dienst werden 3,49 kanadische Dollar pro Monat bzw. 4,49 australische Dollar monatlich betragen.
Die künftigen Twitter-Blue-Abonnenten könnten einige zusätzliche Funktionen nutzen. Sie werden künftig unter anderem 30 Sekunden lang fertige Tweets verändern können. Außerdem können sie gespeicherte Tweets in "Lesezeichen"-Ordnern besser organisieren und bekommen eine eigene Kundenbetreuung. Seit Oktober 2019 gibt es "Facebook News" bereits in den USA. Jetzt startet die Kooperation zwischen Medienhäusern und der Plattform auch in Deutschland.
Facebook hat am Dienstag in Deutschland einen gesonderten Bereich für journalistische Inhalte gestartet. In den "Facebook News" wird ab sofort in der App und auf der Webseite des Online-Giganten eine Auswahl von Nachrichteninhalten von derzeit 35 Verlagen mit mehr als 100 Medienmarken präsentiert.
Qualitätsjournalismus und Monetarisierungsmöglichkeiten
"Mit 'Facebook News' wollen wir den Menschen auf unserer Plattform mehr Qualitätsjournalismus zur Verfügung stellen und gleichzeitig den Verlagen mehr Monetarisierungsmöglichkeiten bieten", sagte Facebook-Manager Jesper Doub der Deutschen Presse-Agentur.
"Facebook News" war im Oktober 2019 in den USA eingeführt worden. Anfang 2021 startete der Dienst in Großbritannien. Deutschland ist nun das dritte Land weltweit, in dem Facebook und Verlage in dieser Form kooperieren. Der Dienst wird bei Anwenderinnen und Anwendern in Deutschland im Laufe des Tages erscheinen.
Am Montag hatte überraschend der Medienkonzern Axel Springer angekündigt, bei "Facebook News" im Rahmen einer umfassenden internationalen Kooperation mit an Bord zu sein. Neu auf der aktuellen Liste der Kooperationspartner ist unter anderem auch die Südwestdeutsche Medienholding ("Süddeutsche Zeitung", "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" und "Stuttgarter Zeitung").

Twitter has launched a new "tip jar" feature that lets people send money to others on the social network.
The company says the feature is "an easy way to support the incredible voices that make up the conversation".
To begin with, only a select group of people can receive tips - a group Twitter said was made up of "creators", journalists, experts, and non-profits.
But the feature has also been criticised for exposing personal information such as email addresses.
The tip jar function essentially adds a small icon to a user's profile - on mobile devices only for now - with a drop-down menu for other payment providers such as PayPal, Venmo, or the Cash App, the latter two of which are popular in the United States.
But because the payment is made through those external systems, some Twitter users noticed that tipping a PayPal account lets the recipient know the postal address of the tip sender.

It was only a matter of time: Facebook today launched an experimental Clubhouse competitor called Hotline, looking to capitalize on the increasingly popular social media format.
As reported by TechCrunch, Hotline was developed by Facebook’s NPE (New Product Experiment) division, which regularly doles out apps with new ideas (or, in this case, not so new). That said, Hotline does have a few features to differentiate itself from Clubhouse and Twitter’s Spaces.
Most notably, it supports video and will allow participants to toggle video when asking a question, although that feature isn’t live yet. Video appears to play a secondary role to audio though, as streams are presented in small circles the size of a profile image, rather than taking up a big chunk of the screen a la Twitch.
Users can opt to only listen in on the conversation, or be active participants, with a strong emphasis on the question and answer aspect. The app is being helmed by Eric Hazzard, who had previously developed the Q&A app tbh, which was acquired by Facebook in 2017.

Twitter is planning a future update that will allow accounts enabled with two-factor authentication to use security keys as the only authentication method, the company said on Monday. At present, you can use a security key to sign in to your Twitter account, but you need to have another 2FA method — like an authenticator app or SMS codes — enabled as backup.
While authentication apps like Google Authenticator or Authy are more secure than using SMS codes for 2FA, security keys — physical keys that connect to your computer using USB or Bluetooth — are the most secure way to protect an account online. Users don’t have to type in a code that could be intercepted by a malicious third party.
You connect the key, your browser issues a challenge, then the key cryptographically signs the challenge and verifies your identity. Another benefit of using a security key: users don’t have to give Twitter any additional personal information, such as a telephone number, to be able to log in to their accounts. On Wednesday, Twitter rolled out a tiny little feature that will make it easier for you to thread your tweets together. Tweet threading is a feature that's been around for several years, but now you can choose to add a new tweet you're drafting to an existing thread right from the text box. In der EU-Kommission macht sich immer mehr Widerstand gegen Facebooks Digitalwährung Libra breit. Die Kommission soll derzeit potenziell wettbewerbswidriges Verhalten untersuchen.
Laut einem am Dienstagabend veröffentlichten Bericht der Nachrichtenagentur Bloomberg formiert sich bei den Wettbewerbshütern der Europäischen Union (EU) Widerstand gegen die vom Internet-Riesen Facebook angekündigte Einführung der Digitalwährung "Libra". Die EU-Kommission untersuche derzeit "potenziell wettbewerbswidriges Verhalten", hieß es in dem Artikel. Bloomberg beruft sich auf ein Dokument, das der Agentur vorliege.
Bedenken gegen Facebook Libra
In der EU-Kommission gebe es demnach Bedenken, dass Facebook mit dem Bezahlsystem Libra Wettbewerber ausschließen werde. Der Internetkonzern könnte damit "mögliche Wettbewerbsbehinderungen" schaffen. Wie Bloomberg weiter berichtet, befindet sich die Untersuchung der EU-Kommission noch in einem frühen Stadium. Weder die EU-Kommission noch Facebook wollten einen Kommentar dazu abgeben, berichtete die Agentur.
Mit dem Libra will Facebook eine durch einen Korb harter Währungen gedeckte digitale Währung schaffen. Das fordert etablierte Akteure im Finanzsystem wie zum Beispiel Zentralbanken heraus. "Facebook kann Libra-Dienste in seine digitalen Plattformen integrieren und von starken Netzwerkeffekten profitieren", hieß es in einer Studie der Deutschen Bank. Nach Einschätzung der Bank-Experten dürfte der Libra in Europa auf "einen wettbewerbsintensiven, aber fragmentierten Markt für digitale Zahlungen stoßen".
In den vergangenen Monaten hatten Meldungen über die geplante Einführung von Libra immer wieder Spekulationen auf Digitalwährungen befeuert und auch den Kurs des Bitcoin zeitweise stark nach oben getrieben. Experten raten immer wieder zur Vorsicht bei Investitionen in Digitalwährungen und verweisen auf extrem starke Kursschwankungen.

Ein Team von Expertinnen und Experten der Online-Plattform Facebook arbeitet künftig an der Erschaffung einer virtuellen Welt namens «Metaverse». Wie das US-Unternehmen am Montag (Ortszeit) mitteilte, sollen sich Nutzerinnen und Nutzer in dieser künstlichen Online-Welt treffen können, Geld ausgeben, Medien konsumieren und möglicherweise sogar arbeiten. Das Projekt wird von Facebook-CEO Mark Zuckerberg als zentral für die Zukunft von Facebook angesehen.
«Heute richten wir eine Metaverse-Produktgruppe ein, um die Teams zusammenzubringen, die sich auf den verantwortungsvollen Aufbau dieses ehrgeizigen Projekts konzentrieren», erklärte Facebook-Manager Andrew Bosworth. Das «Metaverse», ein Begriff, der von dem Science-Fiction-Autor Neal Stephenson geprägt wurde, zeichne sich dadurch aus, dass es dem Nutzer oder der Nutzerin das Gefühl von echter Präsenz gebe, «das Gefühl, wirklich bei den Menschen zu sein». Wie viel weiß Facebook wirklich über mich? Mit einer Werbemaßnahme wollte der Messenger Signal den Konzern nun dazu bringen, seinen Nutzern genau das zu enthüllen. Und wurde prompt gesperrt.
Facebook weiß extrem viel über uns - das ahnen die meisten Nutzer des Dienstes und seiner Töchter Instagram und Whatsapp irgendwo im Hinterkopf. Weil ein solch diffuses Wissen weniger furchteinflößend ist, als es ganz konkret zu wissen, nutzen sie die Apps und Dienste trotzdem weiter. Genau das wollte der Messenger Signal nun mit einer cleveren Kampagne ändern. Und nutzte ausgerechnet Facebooks Herzensstück, um den Dienst zu entlarven.
"Du siehst diese Werbung, weil du ein Lehrer, aber noch wichtiger Sternzeichen Löwe und Single bist" - solche Werbebanner sollten Nutzern von Facebooks Tochter Instagram gezeigt werden, berichtet Signal in einem Blogpost. Wirklich gruselig wird das erst, wenn man weiß, dass diese und weitere Daten wie der Standort, die Interessen und Vorlieben in der gezeigten Werbung für die Nutzer tatsächlich zutrafen: Es handelte sich um Informationen, nach denen Facebook seine Nutzer von Werbekunden ansprechen läßt.. Wer die Werbung zu Gesicht bekommt, wird sich und seine Vorlieben also exakt in ihr wiedererkennen.

Twitter hat mit Tip Jar für die englischsprachige Version testweise eine Bezahloption für Twitter-Anwender eingeführt. Twitter sieht dies als eine Möglichkeit an, dass Nutzer neben Follows, Likes und Retweets für ihren Content eine monetäre Belohnung erhalten können. Auch im hauseigenen Clubhouse-Clon Spaces sollen sie Zahlungen versenden und annehmen können. Allerdings gilt das zunächst nur für Anwender, die die App unter Android verwenden. Doch ganz so sicher scheint die Funktion noch nicht zu sein: Ein Tip-Jar-Nutzer stellte fest, dass die mit Paypal verknüpfte E-Mail-Adresse des Geldempfängers eingesehen werden kann – auch dann, wenn kein Geld versendet wird. Les clés de sécurité sont particulièrement utiles pour l'authentification à deux facteurs, car on peut les lier à un site ou un service particulier. Cela protège contre les attaques par phishing contre lesquelles les mots de passe ne sont pas suffisants. On les oublie, ils ne sont pas assez robustes, on peut se les faire subtiliser. L'authentification à deux facteurs associe souvent un mot de passe à une autre étape de connexion : un code généré par une application d'authentification ou envoyé par SMS, par exemple, ou une clé de sécurité physique que l’on connecte à un ordinateur portable ou à un smartphone. Facebook's app-focused New Product Experimentation team on Wednesday introduced the Collab app, a TikTok-style app for making music with friends. Collab is launching as an invite-only beta on iOS, according to a release from the NPE team. With Collab, users can create, watch and mash up original videos and music.
Users don't need any musical experience to add their own recordings, according to the release. The app allows you to swipe and discover other videos that might complete your composition. Your creations can be shared across platforms and others can mix and match with your creation. Think of it as digital Dadaism.
