Marketers Increase Their Social Media Marketing Budgets Because... [infographic] | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
Social media is a great communication channel; there is no question. Smart marketers use social media to offer great support, increase brand reach and to (Why Marketers Increase Their Social Media Marketing Budgets?

Marty
All the blah blah of this infographic is right, but I would never approach it this way with my skeptical ecommerce friends (wrote about using Made To Stick to help ealier today http://www.scoop.it/t/ecommerce-revolution/p/2263037417/ecommerce-better-ui-mobile-cms-top-oracle-survey-report-scenttrail-tips ).

Instead I would ask questions what I know they care about - SEO. Once I get the response yes we care about SEO I would tie social signals to strength in SEO. If SEO didn't get their attention, and it always does, I fall down to MAD (mutually assured destruction). Do you really want your competitors to have any more of a jump? What if they are right about social and you are wrong. Have to hedge right?

If things get gritty I go all the way to the question of how well delay has helped so far. How well did delays in key Internet marketing tactics such as:
|
* Free Shipping.

* Email Marketing.

* PPC.
* SEO.

* Internal Merchandising Based Search.

* Abandoned Cart Emails.

* Video Marketing.

Work out?

Delay is Internet marketing’s only sin. All actions are beneficial even if they blow up. Usually when things blow up they blow up real good (or bad) and learning is fast and exponential. Deadly is the only tactic that creates positions that can't be unwound because time can't be recovered.

It is possible to delay your company's way into an early grave in Internet marketing. Much more difficult, though not impossible, to act your way into the same grave. Actions bring the web's magical feedback loops (wrote about social media marketing feedback loops today: http://www.atlanticbt.com/blog/social-medias-magic-loops/  ).

If after working through something now trusted, wasn't long ago SEO was a fight too btw, and the delay will get you killed argument there is either light at the end of the social media marketing tunnel or there isn't. If there isn't.... well good luck with that :).M

All that sail this infographic still has factoids I would work into any pitch about social just not all at once and probably not from a Bid Data BI perspective. Mind you I use stuff like 6 degrees of separation all the time :).

Semantic Web Your Table Is Almost Ready - Linked Data Takes Programmable Web To Higher Level | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

ProgrammableWeb.com keeps you up to date with web mashups and APIs: what's new, interesting, useful and important. Hundreds of mashups and APIs. Contribute, search, view, and chart them.

Marty Note
Technical sounding riff here that has a secret buried deep in there. We've seen Google realign links and now some power players are working on link code. Sounds like contextual semantic web is right around the corner and boy is that going to be an interesting SEO year. Here is how you can get ready for the Semantic Web:

* Tell better stories (semantic web lives on context).
* Make sure your tone is natrual and smooth with keywords.

* Every piece of content is closer than you think, so watch for dupes.

* Remember to use canonical URLs when in doubt re: dupe content.

* More and More, Faster and Faster Better and Better (http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2012/07/internet-markeings-secret-more-more.html )

Hang on to something nailed down as life is about to change all over again.

Smartphone Users To Download 37 Apps in 2012, Long Term Trend is Downward | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

The world’s smartphone subscribers will download about 36 billion apps in 2012, according to a new industry analyst forecast; resulting in almos (Smartphone Users Worldwide will Download 37 Apps on Average in 2012, Long ...)...

Marty Note On App Problem
Apps are too isolated. They are the flashy thing at the checkout you pick up, look at and then put down before you leave the store OR are almost immediately sad that Snickers Bar jumped into your bag. Most apps get little use after download.

Is the Killer APP out there? Maybe, but the phone, pad, laptop, desktop thing is what is killing the apps now since, unless you are younger than 30, who has time to play with apps when WORK or LIFE is crushed with demands.

There in lies the "app rub". Apps don't SAVE time the SPEND it and that is a sin no one can afford, or no one past 30 :).M

Social Media Life Lessons From Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer

Social Media Life Lessons From Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

I was at the Bronto User Conference listening to two web managers complaining about wanting to jump off the roof. Their complaints were around these issues:

* Speed of change.

* Amount of STUFF being asked to manage.

* Competition.

* Their lack of confidence.

* Feeling of running forever in place.

Our jobs as Internet marketers can feel overwhelming. Our contemporary lives can feel overwhelming. I learned valuable lessons from surviving cancer, though I am not sure this last month counts as surviving (lol), and riding a bicycle across America (Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer http://www.MartinsRide.com ) that have helped:

I. Always MORE Than You Think.

II. Be Flexible And EASY.

III. It is NEVER about THEM.

I. Always More
There were times during Martin's Ride when I was sure it was impossible to turn the bicycle's crank one more time. Then, via some miracle, the crank went around again. My tank and yours is never empty and capable of miracles. No matter how overwhelming something seems in the moment it will become routine, easy and expected. Shorter way to translate this lesson is Stay Calm, Carry On.

II. Flexible and EASY
My team came to me after a horrible dangerous day and wanted to quit. We were 1,000 miles from home with 2,000 to go and a significant portion of my life savings was spent. Suddenly I realized WE were creating Martin's Ride together and Martin's Ride was less and less about my dream of riding a bicycle across America and more and more about our team's needs.

Checking in I discovered they wanted a route change so we could see National Parks. That route change meant I had to climb mountains, something I'd wanted to avoid. Route change and continue or no route change and end in Tennessee made it an easy choice, a choice that changed my life.

Climbing Avoided Mountains
http://www.martinsride.com/Home/Blog/July-2010/Climbing-Avoided-Mountains.aspx

III. It is NEVER about THEM
I can only ever be in charge of me and there are times, like this last month, when I'm not sure about that (lol). When I changed my vision of what Martin's Ride was it changed me (or the other way around I'm not sure :). I was more open and less of a pain.

None of us build anything alone anymore. Everything requires an army of people. People make life and love better when they know they matter to YOU. Rule III can be tough if you don't practice it in conjunction with II and I.

Read Pema's The Things That Scare You or The Wisdom of No Escape to help find acceptance, peace and love.

Not sure why I felt these lessons needed sharing this Saturday. Usually means I'm trying to remind myself, to fill up the courage again :). No matter WHAT happens in my life I rode a bicycle from the Duke Cancer Clinic in Durham, NC to the Santa Monica Pier.

That knowledge and these lessons mean bring it on, its all good. Hope you feel the same :).M

Google: How To Optimize Google+ Content for Lead Gen

Google: How To Optimize Google+ Content for Lead Gen | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
Pause for a moment to think. Are you really making the most of your Google+ presence? As in, are you leveraging Google+ for all its lead gen potential? The most organic way to use Google+ to generate leads is by posting compelling content updates that include links back to your website.

And in order for this to work, you need marketing content that will interest your audience and capture their attention. This includes content such as blog posts, videos, webinars, ebooks and whitepapers, reports, and interviews. When you share compelling content on your Google+ business page, you'll not only engage your audience and generate discussions, but you'll also drive your followers back to your website where they can read/view the entire resource. And from there, you can convert them into leads!

Create Social Media Campaigns With Lasting Clout [Tips]

Create Social Media Campaigns With Lasting Clout [Tips] | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

As your team plugs away creating regular tweets, Facebook updates, YouTube videos and LinkedIn discussions and you are held ever more accountable for ROI, you may be wondering if it is all worth it.

Marty Note
Solid article and worth the price of admission (the time to read it) for the opening stats alone if you are having trouble selling social media marketing and let's hop you are past that. My team and I create and curate a lot of content. It still isn't enough by half due to the More and More, Faster and Faster, Better and Better Rule (http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2012/07/internet-markeings-secret-more-more.html).

What I like about this article is it doesn't get hung on planning as so many do. You can't "plan" more than about 50% of your social calendar because you must respond to what is happening based on your previous creations (articles you write) or curation (articles or content you share that others write).

Many of these, "How to create social media plan," articles get hung up in planning and KPIs. Both are important to developing a successful social media process but not the end unto themselves many make them out to be.

I also like the idea that you aren't just wrapping today's fish with yesterday's social media news. Social media has value OVER TIME even though it feels like it is all happening NOW. We like to curate around certain brand reinforcing (and I'm going to use the B word because it is convenient but read Branding An Artifact Of The Past for more on the latest controvery around the B word : http://www.atlanticbt.com/blog/is-branding-an-artifact-of-the-past/ ).

Act short term, think long term is good social media advice.

Ultimate Social Media Revolutionary Guide For Traffic, Leads, Conversions (Exceptional)

Ultimate Social Media Revolutionary Guide For Traffic, Leads, Conversions (Exceptional) | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Are you up against competition that has deep pockets and can outspend you in traditional advertising methods? Click here to find out how you can bring traffic and leads for next to nothing...

Traditional outbound marketing can end up being a poor investment. You have to rely on channels like cold-calling, paid branding and print advertising.All of those channels can get really expensive really fast.

Inbound marketing, on other hand, will help you capture attention, generate leads, convert customers and keep those customers…all at a lower cost to you than your competition.

Let’s look at a few steps to get you there.

Step #1 – Ignore Sales And Focus On Marketing

It’s much better to create a marketing strategy that feeds that team qualified, warm leads…instead of cold, and possibly dead leads.

Instead, focus your efforts on building a marketing team with excellent marketing skills.

For example:

Hire brilliant marketers – Focus on tightly targeted markets – Close qualified leads –

It comes down to the answer of these three questions:

Do they have the authority to buy? Do they have the budget to buy? When do they plan on buying?

A Leads (ready to buy in 3 months or less), some B leads (is ready to buy in three to twelve months). C leads marketing can keep.

Step #2. Focus On Multiple Inbound Channels

The key behind an effective inbound marketing strategy is to create and deliver valuable content.

Here is a template to use for your inbound marketing strategy:

Blog

Your team should focus on publishing quality content two to five times a week. Quality means search-engine friendly, highly-researched and compelling. Engage in comment marketing – Someone on your team should focus on visiting sites within your industry to interact with bloggers and readers in the comment section.   Publish guest blog posts – Guest blogging is one of the fastest ways to grow your subscriber base.

Produce online video

Video can help improve your search rankings, raise the amount of time people stay on your page and even boost conversion rates on your landings pages. Interact in the social bookmarking world – While this isn’t one of the most popular ways to generate leads, it is definitely one you shouldn’t ignore.

Establish authority on Q+A sites

Quora has really established itself as a place for professional exchange of ideas.

Design brilliant Infographics

Visual.ly, is a one-stop shop for Infographic creation, has this inbound marketing technique nailed.

Build a social media audience on the big four – Focus your audience-building efforts on Facebook, LinkedIn,

Twitter and Google+.

If your target audience is on Pinterest or Tumblr, then use those sites as well. Keep in mind—don’t spread yourself too thin. Pick two or three that you can maximize your exposure.

Implement a solid startup SEO plan – If you run a startup, then you are in an excellent position to take advantage of everything that SEO has to offer.

All of the efforts behind a good inbound marketing plan won’t cost you a dime except for the sweat equity you invest. This means you can compete with bigger competition that is better funded.

For each of the inbound marketing efforts above you’ll want to break them down into steps.

Step #3. Dominate LinkedIn Groups

While the big three social media sites get all the attention, LinkedIn is quietly becoming a powerhouse. With over 150 million users, you have a lot of opportunity to generate some serious attention.

The specific strategy I want to focus on is with Groups. Contribute and engage with LinkedIn Groups with this quick 5-step strategy and you’ll generate some high-quality leads.

Find the best Group to join – LinkedIn has lots of groups that are divided into categories. Find three to five small groups that most accurately represent your target demographic. Target popular discussions – You’ll waste your time if you simply try to join every discussion. Instead, search for the most popular discussions—these will have the most visibility.

Start a new discussion – Before you start your own discussion, make sure you spend some time in other discussions. Get a feel for the culture of the group and find out what is important to them. Follow up – It’s not easy keeping track of discussions, so you’ll have to be proactively visit your groups and monitor the discussions—especially the ones you started. Start a Group – This is a perfect way to establish your authority. But you have to be strategic here. Make this group center on your brand and how your message is different than the competition. Brands That Defy Gravity is a great example of a group that stands out in a crowded market.

Step #4. Never Attend A Trade Show Again

Trade shows can be very expensive.

There is a more effective—and cheaper—way to leverage the power of trade shows.

Here’s what you could do also:

Blog about the main points of each speaker – Summarize the conference –

Inbound marketing is truly a gift to startups who are strapped for cash. Depending upon how big your team is, you will all probably end up working like a slave to get it all done…but it will be worth the effort.

Can social media make your company smarter?

Can social media make your company smarter? | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

You've started a fan page for your company on Facebook. You've attracted a few followers on Twitter. Seems you've got that whole social media thing figured out. Or do you?

Marty's Social Media Smarter Note
Anything that provides feedback loops creates an opportunity for learning and growth, so yes Social CAN make you and your company "smarter" about what people think about what you do.

Since we live in a time when marketing is ABOUT what people think about what you do judge by their willingness to take some action (Retweet, Like, Link or Advocate). More than what YOU think about what you do Social Media is about what THEY think about what you did.

Feedback loops should create an ever more intimate relationship between YOU and THEM and that is how, as this article points out, to use social media marketing to become "smarter".

Facebook Adds Cool Search The Web Feature With One Problem - Uses Bing

Facebook Adds Cool Search The Web Feature With One Problem - Uses Bing | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Marty Facebook GoofyStupid Note
Facebook's undoing may be their goofy-stupid treatment of Google. Google's searches were up almost 50% IN THE SUMMER or when they usually go DOWN. Google+ is capturing more gurus as it becomes clear Google will float their index toward their social net and Facebook continues to be a little boy who wants to play with his own toys even after a troubled IPO.

This new predictive modeling search sounds cool, but I've been forced into a lot of Bing searches lately because I can't figure out how to get it off my browser (I can figure it out I just don't want to take the time as I am not MAD enough yet but will be soon). Bing stinks.

My favorite example of their stinking is I type 2012 July calendar the other day to be met with an image for 2011 July calendar. Talk about goofystupid results. The searches for a current calendar must be 100x over searches for the old so search algorithm tuning 101.

Facebook better start playing nicely with others or all the men in the kingdom won't be able to put humpty back together again. :).M
