Failure Not So Bad, But Learn The Ropes

This Fortune post is encouraging and informative. Encouraging because fewer startups fail than urban myth predicts and informative because insights shared about learning the rules of the road are accurate to our startups experience.

If you think creating a startup is unstructured and free you'd be wrong, very wrong. Startups have an intricate ballet of rules, gatekeepers, and customs. Ignore any of those things at your startup's absolute peril.

I don't think my startup failed due to impolite attention to rules and regulations. We failed because we didn't have the right people sitting in the right seats on the bus. Friends and business partners can be one and the same, but hiring friends creates more work not less.

When hiring friends you need to guard against your assumptions and playing rough can be harder with friends. Playing rough is needed because every startup is a life or death struggle against time, competition and the evolution of markets. This post shares all of that and more. A good read for any wannabe startup entrepreneur.

Business Storytelling: 5 Mistakes Most Storytellers Make

The purpose of this presentation is to list 5 typical mistakes people make when sharing stories in business settings.

The 5 Storytelling Mistakes in Biz:

* Don't say "Let Me Tell You A Story" in a business context.
* Stories and facts should be intermingled in biz storytelling.

* Easy to get the "Hero" wrong (THEM not YOU).
* Story must relate to real world "routines", "habits" & realities.
* Repeat, Rinse, Repeat and so on.

Funny was just thinking about how everything starts with a story now. Didn't think about these five "mistakes" though. Great post.

How Not to Pitch Your Business in Social Media

How Not to Pitch Your Business in Social Media | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

Using social media correctly is like putting your Rolodex on steroids.

Suddenly, it can be much easier to find people. When it works, the days of gatekeepers blocking your phone calls are a thing of the past. Perhaps the best thing about using social media is that it allows you to communicate with all of your contacts at once through status updates.

But there are some important lessons to learn. For one, you still have to build relationships if you want your communications to move your business forward. And building meaningful relationships in social media can take more effort than meeting people face-to-face.
