Startup Weekend is a citizen-driven EDU reform. Startup Weekend EDU is powered by the Kauffman Foundation, Google, Grockit, Pearson, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Startup weekend offers a platform for educators and technology industry innovators to converge.
The lines between informal and formal education are blurring," observes Betsy (Elizabeth) Corcoran, CEO and Co-Founder of EdSurge, a leading industry publication that reports on education technology trends. "We can use technology to unlock incredible educational opportunities in both arenas--and will do so most effectively when educators and technologists work together."
Startup Weekend is a global network of passionate educators, entrepreneurs, developers and designers on a mission to revolutionize the education and learning markets who focus on building a web or mobile application that could form the basis of a credible business. The rise of the teacherpreneur
"Education is changing, and it’s changing fast ... What we’re witnessing is a bottom-up revolution in education: Learners, not institutions, are leading innovation. This is an era of plenty. I like to call it the Education Harvest". Michael Karnjanaprakorn
The Centre for Professional and Academic Development, (CentrePAD) - the social enterprise behind the online school that is being hailed as a revolution in community education. CentrePAD specialises in community education, encouraging lifelong learning and tackling the need for accessible extra education, regardless of age, ability, or background.
Udacity will be set up as a teaching institution, not a research institution. "At Stanford, priority is your research career," says Thrun to Reuters. "That is counter to teaching 100,000 students, who generate 100,000 emails. Stanford is the institution being disrupted, it's not the institution doing the disrupting. Similarly, Thrun isn't doing Udacity in direct association with Google. He told Reuters that that Udacity does fit quite easily into Google's mission of making the world's information available for free. "Having a clean slate is a better way to start. The last thing I want is people asking whether Google is disrupting education." Better to ask if Sebastian is trying to disrupt education.
What Khan and Thrun and others are creating is a new educational paradigm, which promises not only much greater scalability than anything we’ve had until now, but also higher-quality education. That’s the real lesson of Thrun’s Stanford students taking his class online: it means that the online model really can have its cake (reach millions of people) while eating it too (be better for students than the courses offered at elite institutions).
In 2011, Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, venture capitalist and part of Facebook board of directors, warned that higher education was a bubble waiting to burst. According to Thiel, the imminent higher education bubble bears striking similarities with the precedent technology and housing bubbles. Comparing universities to commercial markets, higher education is a major investment with poor payouts (job crisis) and market failure, leading some to question how much they have overvalued higher education in America.
The higher education bubble may not have reached a crisis point yet, but it deserves more research and attention. Read the following infographic, which compares the higher education bubble to the housing bubble, and decide for yourself.
At present, a course of 160,000 students could cover its overhead by charging $1 per student, Stavens says. With costs that well-distributed, Udacity need not worry about whether its students qualify for federal financial aid -- the lifeblood of most degree-granting for-profits.
“We really see this new online class not just as a means to offer free education, but also as a way for some of our most talented students to find new, better jobs,” Thrun wrote. “You are among the top 1,000 students right now -- which is amazing. Based on your performance in this class, you are of the caliber that tech companies here really want.”
Vi Hart is lesser known than Khan Academy but her engaging videos explaining mathematics have been viewed 10 million times. Hart does not quite do what the Khan Academy does but she operates in the same space. Her interest is not in the standard K-12 curriculum but broader concepts of mathematics; the stuff students rarely see before college.
An online compelation of insights and predictions about the future of learning and the central part that the web will play in that shpere. The components for this eBook have been compiled from contributors to Mozilla's Learning Freedom and the Web Festival held in Barcelona in 2010. Mark Surman, Executive Director of Mozilla, summarised that event in the following way:
"Barcelona sparked a conversation about how the future of learning and the future of the web are intertwined, and about the role both play in fueling creativity, innovation and common wealth. This is a conversation that is growing as we speak.
Hopefully, this book will help you find an entry point into this conversation. A place to grab hold so you can tinker, hack and make the future of learning in your own way"

Skillshare is a platform for instructor-led, in-person classes. You can search for classes to take or propose to teach a class topic. As the name implies, Skillshare is a community of experts and entrepreneurs; therefore, the best teachers are some of the most intrepid students. And if you set your mind to it, teaching on Skillshare can actually help sustain your livelihood, without the traditional overhead of an institution. Here’s how.
LEARNING MORE THAN AI: The numbers are in: Stanford profs Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig saw a record 160,000 people register for their AI class this autumn. They "graduated" or awarded "certificates of accomplishment" to an astonishing 23,000 students. Sebastian says that next week, he'll share plans for two new classes next week at Berlin's DLD conference . Stanford won't be part of the equation, though: Sebastian is now co-founder of Know Labs , along with David Stavens and Mike Sokolsky , both long-time collaborators. Know Labs aims to be a free university--and has initial backing from Charles River Ventures and is offering jobs and stock options . Says Thrun: "I really believe in free education. I really don't worry about money. If we change the world, we will find a way to survive."
Programmer extraordinaire Avi Flombaum has made tens of thousands of dollars teaching on the Skillshare platform. In fact, he ended up quitting his job. Now, he teaches at night, and spends his days traveling around the world and working on his next startup.
Skillshare is a community marketplace that enables users to learn anything from anyone, thereby democratizing learning. We’re big fans of Skillshare here at The Next Web. In November of last year, I taught a Skillshare class with Mashable’s Sarah Kessler on how to pitch to media. 40 people signed up! We donated all of the proceeds to Raise Cache for HackNY. CEO Michael Karnjanaprakorn shares a couple of examples of people who’ve made money doing what they love on Skillshare:
Another Skillshare teacher turned entrepreneur named Victoria wrote Mike this email last year:
All has been very well. I have been meaning to let you know that Skillshare enticed me to get my biz going in flowers, after my flower class that I taught! I specialize in creating on-brand weekly flowers for luxury and retail boutiques and corporate clients at Flower Details…Thanks for the inspiration and the push!
So far her business has been a success with clients including Equinox gym and Magnolia Bakery.
We need to start envisioning our teachers as knowledge generators and creative professionals whom we trust to innovate and implement unorthodox ideas that might transform teaching and learning. The time has come to reward innovation among our best and most creative teachers. They should be given the time and resources to reflect on their practice, experiment with new ideas, and implement strategies to more effectively engage learners.

The truth is that the educational process, in many ways, is about becoming a self learner, something that has contributed to the rise of homeschooling as well. A self learner is a lifelong learner who must be versatile, resourceful, disciplined, motivated, and adaptable. Now, considering how globalization is transforming the job market, these kinds of skills are becoming increasingly desired as it is likely that no one will be able to have the same job for their entire life. Companies need these kinds of workers, even if the current employment paradigm only considers those with degrees.

In the worst economy since the Great Depression, Americans are struggling to earn a living, raise their families, and get an education. How will Americans adapt to learn, work, and connect in the future? The importance of education to one’s career has never been greater. In Society 3.0, Dr. Wilen-Daugenti describes how the future of higher education is tied to innovation, technology, and an enduring knowledge of society’s transformative nature. It will equip your readers with the tools to make smarter educational decisions, whether for their children or themselves.
“On the long term, I think the potential for this to revolutionize education is just tremendous,” Koller says. “There are millions of people around the world that have access only to the poorest quality of education or sometimes nothing at all.”
Technology could change that by making it possible to teach classes with 100,000 students as easily and as cheaply as a class with just 100. And if you look around the world, demand for education in places like South Africa is enormous.
Online education and distance learning have been going on at Stanford and other schools for years, but Plummer believes the technology has reached an inflection point.

The concept behind Skillshare is simple: empower everyone to teach anything, anywhere. And sometimes it's the simplest ideas that have the greatest long-term impact. The Skillshare philosophy is that everyone has something valuable to teach.
What is the idea or concept behind Floating University?
The concept of a modern university as the nexus of research and teaching is no longer relevant in a world of Google and Yahoo! where all of the world's information is available at the click of a mouse. A new era has been ushered in. As the best teachers are now producing coursework that they can license independently of the institutions where they reside, our idea was to bring these courses to everyone, everywhere, anytime. The freedom that comes from this is nothing less than revolutionary.
Around the world, it's becoming easier than ever to sell your human capital - the sum total of your knowledge, experiences and talents - to the highest bidder. Using new P2P marketplaces like Sidetour and Gidsy, you can sell a lifetime’s worth of experiences and memories the same way you might sell a pair of used shoes. Using educational marketplaces like Skillshare, you can sell your esoteric knowledge to people with an interest in a specific topic. New avenues to explore for teacherpreneurs.
So some rumors suggested Apple was going to squash the existing textbook publishing paradigm--perhaps "digitally destroy" it--by releasing a new platform for powerful interactive textbook design, along with all the necessary tools to enable authors to make iPad e-textbooks truly 21st century. The new package would be a "GarageBand for textbooks," it's been thought, leveraging the simple and amazingly potent skills of the iPad GarageBand app to attract all sorts of people, incuding those who'd otherwise never have been interested in making music.
Today's amalgamation of dropping technology costs and Open Educational Resources have allowed quality educational delivery to cost a fraction of traditional brick and mortar institutions. Adding in the principles of e-learning and peer-to-peer learning, coupled with open-source technology and the full use of Open Educational Resources, cumulates in a tuition-free quality education for all.
One passionate teacher who is not a 'qualified teacher' nor a member of a educational instution nor dependent on government funding yet has provided 95 million lessons to a learner-hungry world. Salman Khan is the poineer teacherpreneur. Let's hope thousands choose to follow his example.
