The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly been one of the most disruptive periods in most organizations' history. For instance, during 2020, GDP in advanced economies plummeted, with many businesses having to shut for prolonged periods, and nearly all having to rapidly adapt to the changing conditions.

Indeed, McKinsey recently argued that one of the few plus points from the pandemic was it reinforced the importance of building change capabilities within our organizations. As we begin to see some kind of normality returning to life, there has been an understandable desire to examine how we can better prepare ourselves for the future.

I am quite certain that distributed work is here to stay. Even Dr. Anthony Fauci at the US CDC is surprised at how long this pandemic is lasting. With the highly infectious Omicron variant becoming dominant in many countries, it does not look like it will be over soon. In a few months time, some people will have been working distributively for two years, not at their request, but having found new work norms to get things done. I have spoken to many people who will not go back to a carbon-intensive work commute.

As the number of predictions for the metaverse grow, there is one unifying sentiment: Enterprises will need to be ready for the coming adjustments of work when it comes to utilizing the digital platform. Gartner, as part of a study, forecasts that in four years time, one-in-four people will spend an hour or more in the metaverse on a daily basis.

“Vendors are already building ways for users to replicate their lives in digital worlds,” said Marty Resnick, research vice president at Gartner. “From attending virtual classrooms to buying digital land and constructing virtual homes, these activities are currently being conducted in separate environments. Eventually, they will take place in a single environment, the metaverse, with multiple destinations across technologies and experiences.”
