Introducing the new Google+ - Google

Introducing the new Google+ - Google | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Since we last posted, we’ve spent a lot of time listening to what people using Google+ had to say. There were two features they kept coming back to: Communities, which now average 1.2 million new joins per day, and Collections, which launched just five months ago and is growing even faster. Whether it’s the Nonfiction Addiction Community, where people can be found discussing the best in Crime or Travel storytelling, or the Watch Project Collection, where more than 40,000 people are following an antique watch hobbyist, these are the places on Google+ where people around the world are spending their time discovering and sharing things they love.

"And so we’ve reimagined Google+ to help them do that. Today, we’re starting to introduce a fully redesigned Google+ that puts Communities and Collections front and center. Now focused around interests, the new Google+ is much simpler. And it’s more mobile-friendly—we’ve rebuilt it across web, Android and iOS so that you’ll have a fast and consistent experience whether you are on a big screen or small one. You’ll need to opt-in to this new version of Google+ on the web to see the changes—check out our Google+ post for more on how to give it a try."

Don't jump in right away. Rather, sniff around. The whole notion of a robust Community feature sounds appealing.

Behind The +1: Meet The New Google+(Plus) - TechCrunch

Behind The +1: Meet The New Google+(Plus) - TechCrunch | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

"“Where it shines today, it’s actually pretty amazing. Topics like astrophotography, British dragonflies, crochet, Disc Golf Pro Tips, Earthquakes. The topics of conversation span from niche to broad.” Product Director at Google, Luke Wroblewski tells me. Communities were first introduced in 2012 in hopes to cancel out the need for discussion groups…including Google’s own Groups product. It succeeded. Collections are a bit newer, having been introduced earlier this year. It has also been successful and dovetailed with the Communities product nicely.

Wroblewski, known for his responsive and progressive design work, tells me that the key to this rollout is the consistent, mobile first experience that hasn’t historically been a hallmark of G+. Along with the responsive web redesign, the iOS app has been completely rebuilt and redesigned and the Android app is refocused on what people are using, pushing aside the parts that didn’t catch on."

What’s Really Going On With Google+? - business.com

What’s Really Going On With Google+? - business.com | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
That being said, it’s possible that the refocus on Google+ and its new features will be the dawn of a new era for the network and its users. A post on Slate puts a positive spin on the change:

The social network will shift emphasis to what might be its only genuine constituency: interest-based communities who use the platform to share news and comments about niche topics like photography, electric cars, and outer space. Google Plus’s new “Collections” feature will let people group their posts by topic and follow topics rather than just other users. Think of it as a sort of male-dominated mini-Pinterest.

Rolled out earlier this week, the feature is accessible on the desktop version of Google+; just click on the dropdown menu in the upper-right hand corner of any of your public posts and select “Pin post.” Pinned posts are visible to desktop and Android users. How to Use Google+ Profiles and Pages for Better Visibility | Social Media Examiner

How to Use Google+ Profiles and Pages for Better Visibility | Social Media Examiner | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

Google+ business pages generally represent entities like brands, businesses or companies and have their own set of benefits and constraints. Google+ profiles represent individuals, have one administrator and let you add people and pages to your circles, +1 other pages and +1 content across the web.

#1: Claim a Custom URL

Google+ now offers easy-to-remember custom URLs (plus.google.com/+username) so it’s much easier to find and connect with others and promote your content. Custom URLs are available for both Google+ profiles and pages and are very easy to set up.

#2: Optimize for Search

Whether you’re looking at your profile or your page, I suggest you start with the About section—tagline, introduction, contact information, links, etc. Link to your website(s) and profiles, pages and channels on other social networks—make it as easy as possible for people to learn more about your business. Don’t forget to include these links on your personal profile as well.

#3: Leverage Personal Audiences

When you optimize both your personal profile and page, you can use them together to cross-promote and amplify your industry content—whether that content is your own blog post or other related news you’ve found throughout the web.

4 Ways To Use Google+ Hangouts To Ramp Up Your Content Marketing Initiative - Marketing Land

4 Ways To Use Google+ Hangouts To Ramp Up Your Content Marketing Initiative - Marketing Land | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

Let’s explore some ways how Google+ can be used to improve online visibility, branding, and content marketing campaigns.

1. Boost Your YouTube Channel

Each of your Google+ Hangouts can be saved to your YouTube channel, allowing you to effortlessly build your video library. Even better is a new feature that allows Hangouts to be streamed live to YouTube, which can open up the possibility for reaching a wider audience.

2. Involve Others

One way to bring even more people to your Hangouts is to host Q&A sessions. These bring your audience together and provide personal interaction, making them feel closer to your brand, which also helps to humanize your brand. They’ll also be more likely to share the video link with their own social media audiences, resulting in increased reach for each of your Hangout sessions.

3. Establish Yourself As A Thought Leader

Demonstrating expertise in your field is invaluable to building and differentiating your brand. You should have a unique value proposition or perspective from which to add value through your publications.

When hosting a webinar through Google+ Hangouts, you can spend the weeks leading up to the event promoting it. This provides a great opportunity to create content like press releases, articles, social media promotions, and newsletters that tie into the upcoming webinar and encourage registrations. As you begin to generate buzz for your upcoming event, your business will enjoy increased exposure, attracting and building your audience.

4. Promote Your Hangouts

Whether you have an upcoming webinar or you just want people to join you for an occasional conversation, promote your Hangouts through social media, your blog, and email newsletters. A great way to build an audience for your Google+ content is to announce a regular Hangouts series that you promote through these channels. Give it an interesting name tied to a day of the week, and host them regularly. It doesn’t have to be every week, but choose a consistent date your audience can remember, such as the first Monday of each month.

5 Google+ Tips to Improve Your Networking | Social Media Examiner

5 Google+ Tips to Improve Your Networking | Social Media Examiner | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

Google+ offers important networking opportunities that set the stage for future partnerships. In this article I’ll share five ways to cultivate Google+ relationships.

#1: Identify Industry Influencers Fast

I truly love to use NOD3x with my Google+ account. NOD3x is Ripples on steroids with a magnifying glass. It brings you right to the doorstep of people you want to meet.

#2: Find Hidden Engagement Opportunities

While that new circle helps you keep up with the people who interacted obviously with your content (e.g., you can see they left a comment or mentioned you in a share), there may be other people and interactions you can’t see. Google Ripples helps you find those interactions.

#3: Validate Expertise With Helpful Tips

Relationship marketing should be your top priority on Google+. Do what you can to help others succeed. Promotion of anything—even self-promotion—is an ongoing task. Constant and blatant self-promotion, though, is a bad idea. Be subtler than that and come up with a commenting strategy to engage with other people’s Google+ posts.

#4: Engage Like-Minded People

It’s easiest to start building your relationships with people you already know, but not in the way you may think. Look at your current friends and followers and see whom they’re connected with. Those friend-of-a-friend connections are very likely to be relevant to you—you already have something in common (your friend).

#5: Focus on Visibility to Connect

The mistake some people make is not taking the time to cultivate a relationship before they start asking for something. First contact has to be handled more delicately than that. Listen to the people you want to connect with. Help them become familiar with you by consistently giving +1s, resharing their content (don’t forget to plus mention them!) and being active in their comment section.
