Should B2B companies follow the B2C lead and join Tumblr? - B2B News Network

Should B2B companies follow the B2C lead and join Tumblr? - B2B News Network | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
We interviewed top marketing experts about the pros and cons of joining Tumblr.

Neil Patel of KissMetrics said, “moving to Tumblr as a business is silly. Sure, it has some social aspect to it, but due to its limitations you can’t optimize for SEO or conversion as you could with a more flexible platform.”

Moz’s Rand Fishkin shared Patel’s views saying, “it’s very unwise.”

“They don’t own or control the platform and Yahoo! could, at any time, change, shut down, sell, or stop supporting Tumblr. My advice is to never build your marketing base on a platform you don’t control.“

A Crash Course in Tumblr for B2B Marketers - Marketing Action Blog - Act-On

A Crash Course in Tumblr for B2B Marketers - Marketing Action Blog - Act-On | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

So if you’re a B2B marketer, should you dive into Tumblr? Honestly, maybe not. If you already feel over-extended on social media platforms, it might be smart to wait. As a time-pressed marketer, you probably don’t want to jump on every available social media platform – unless there’s a compelling business reason for it.

For B2B marketers, there’s no overwhelming evidence that they’ve got to be on Tumblr. LinkedIn? That’s essential. SlideShare? A strong case. Pinterest? Lots of good reasons. But while Tumblr is cool and fun, it doesn’t cater to a business audience. (Yet.)

How to Use Tumblr for SEO and Social Media Marketing - Moz | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

How to Use Tumblr for SEO and Social Media Marketing - Moz | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Many people overlook Tumblr, but it has tremendous potential for SEO and social media marketing. I myself was slow to adopt it as a social media platform, but once I started using it I became hooked by its power and simplicity.

Excerpt...

There are 5 key benefits:

1) Dofollow links

First the biggie. Links from Tumblr, unlike most other social networks are dofollow. Tumblr is at its core a blogging platform, and you have full control of how your tumblrog appears, including using dofollow links on your site.

2) Great content discovery

Another great benefit of Tumblr is that it has a great content discovery system built into it, thanks to its use of hashtags. If you're ever looking for great images or memes, try searching Tumblr for the hashtag, and you'll find some good material.

3) Content testing ground

Another use for Tumblr is as a content testing ground. If you do a lot of social media marketing, you probably have tons of memes and images that you are considering posting to your Facebook page, or you if you create your own memes you may have different variations of a meme that you might want to test.

4) Microsites

Tumblr is the most popular microblogging platforms on the planet, which also makes it an ideal platform for setting up microsites. You won't get the same amount of flexibility as you would with say a self-hosted Wordpress blog, but tumblrogs are quick to set up, simple to manage, and free. And if you want to switch from using a tumblr.com subdomain to your own domain name, it's easy to switch to a domain name you own in the Tumblr settings.

5) Branding

Last, but certainly not least, Tumblr is another tool in your arsenal to promote your brand online. In addition to the other major social sites such as Facebook and Twitter, Tumblr provides another opportunity for you to establish your web presence. It's another chance for your to engage with fans, build relationships with potential customers, and get your brand name out there, especially if you want to target a younger demographic. As the online marketer Pat Flynn always says, the best marketing strategy online is to Be Everywhere.

Marteq's insight:

Tumblr is underappreciated, but I haven't seen it have an impact on the B2B social media strategy. Put a bit of effort into it and let me know.

Austin Musgrove's curator insight, November 24, 2014 5:16 PM

A few months ago, I created a Tumblr and rarely used it but since using it for content marking in my Digital Marketing course, I've started to enjoy it.  I find it more laid back and extremely simple to use.  I personally believe that it can be very valuable for the right brand.

Jenna Coppola's curator insight, May 13, 2015 12:36 PM

I was attracted to this article because I am a huge user and advocate for Tumblr. I think it's one of the most fun and interesting social media platforms right now. It's not only filled with a lot of crap you see on Facebook and Twitter half the time. It's very artsy, and filled with knowledgable posts. I also learned about SEO and social media marketing in depth this semester in an Advertising class, so to see it in the works in this article was very interesting. It's great to see that this often overlooked form of social media can reach a whole different  demographic of people than Twitter and FaceBook do. However, I do wish the article gave more examples. He wrote a lot about using Tumblr as a testing tool for his personal memes, photographs, and quotes. However, as just a user I've noticed that there is a lot of advertising by huge companies on Tumblr which I would have liked to read about here.

Tumblr Beat Pinterest, Twitter, and LinkedIn for SocNet Time Spent in December - Marketing Charts

Tumblr Beat Pinterest, Twitter, and LinkedIn for SocNet Time Spent in December - Marketing Charts | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Tumblr may not be a popular player on the world stage, but data from a new comScore study shows that it’s heavily used by Americans, relative to other popular sites. Analyzing share of time spent on social networking sites in December 2012, comScore reveals that while Facebook dominated at 83% share, Tumblr occupied the second spot (5.7%), more than Pinterest (1.9%), Twitter (1.7%), and LinkedIn (1.4%) combined, and almost as much as the aggregate of all other social networks (6.1%).

Marteq's insight:

This is one of those head-scratchers where you ask "where did that come from?" Clearly does not differentiate between B2B and B2X, but worthy of taking note.

I did not expect Tumblr would beat the other websites. I use Tumblr like, 80% of my day, but I didn't expect Tumblr to be that popular. I knew a lot of people used it, but I figured it was nowhere near as popular as Twitter or Facebook.

Margaret Kooser's curator insight, October 2, 2013 2:04 PM

I am on Tumblr more than any other site. I think its because you can be creative and have your own vibe too it.

Molly Langstraat's comment, October 2, 2013 4:04 PM
This makes sense. A lot of teenagers have tumblr and they use it a lot. It is something that parents don't have and they can express themselves. It was interesting to see that it beat all the other websites, in my opinion i thought that Twitter would be on top.
