Apple Watch Looks Cool, Lacks Compelling Use Cases for Salespeople - Gartner

Apple Watch Looks Cool, Lacks Compelling Use Cases for Salespeople - Gartner | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
I know many of us didn’t see the possible uses of the iPhone and iPad when they were initially launched but there were at least obvious use cases (email, contacts, maps, texting, browsing the web, etc) for mobile salespeople.   I am not saying consumers in general will not buy the Apple Watch. For example, I am intrigued on how the Apple Watch will support my iPhone running app, Runkeeper. It would be nice just to check my wrist to see distance traveled and mile splits, and possibly measure my heart rate (I know a Garmin could do this now).  There will also will be consumer apps that will emerge that are cool and drive adoption.  I just don’t see salespeople rushing to buy Apple Watches to help them sell to customers.

Marteq's insight:

What drives it? B2B Apps. Look to SFDC for the first ones to come out. However, I agree with the general consensus.

Salesforce Wear allows for a very specific, verticalized interaction. Think of the mythical Staples' "Easy" button: it brings that button to life.

Salesforce Wear, What Does That Mean? - Enterprise Irregulars

Salesforce Wear, What Does That Mean? - Enterprise Irregulars | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Excerpt...

Salesforce did some smart things. First, they made available some reference applications based on their developer pack. The apps showcase a number of innovative business use cases that won’t exactly be second nature to you unless you are an oil rig worker needing to fix some complex bit of technology (yes, there’s a reference app for that). Second, they made these reference apps available as code for anyone to see, evaluate and modify in an open source way. This will help speed the adoption of Salesforce Wear and identify missing components and new opportunities. Finally, Salesforce is not limiting their deployment to a small number of devices, they’re casting a broad net in an attempt to support the fledgling market. Imagine if Microsoft had done the same thing with Office when the iPad was first announced.

Salesforce Wear Aims To Turbo-Charge Both Enterprise And B2B2C Wearables Markets - Forrester

Salesforce Wear Aims To Turbo-Charge Both Enterprise And B2B2C Wearables Markets - Forrester | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

On June 10, Salesforce.com announced Salesforce Wear, a bundle of free tools and reference applications aimed at evangelizing the power of enterprise wearables. The offering supports six different wearable devices, each with its own open-source reference application to help developers design and build wearable apps that connect to the Salesforce1 platform.

-- >  Salesforce Wear has the potential to turbo-charge the growing market for enterprise wearables.

-- >  Some of the reference applications are pure enterprise/B2B workforce enablement applications which can be generalized to other field service scenarios

-- >  Others reference apps offer solutioning for B2B2C scenarios – which Forrester has been covering extensively in our wearables research.

-- >  Salesforce Wear will offer enterprises a quicker path to creating different types of user scenarios.

-- >  In addition to I&O pros, other tech vendors should take note, too.

-- >  Salesforce’s move into this space both validates the enterprise wearables market and will spur it forward even more quickly.

Marteq's insight:

I don't know. Sometimes companies get out in front to find that there's nothing behind them. Jury's out.

Farid Mheir's curator insight, June 15, 2014 6:21 PM

This may feel a bit too much like Big Brother for some, but with the right kind of incentives, this may hold some promise. I can also envision large conferences where identifications can be moved from badges to wearable devices. Interesting that Salesforce is capturing this market first.

Exploring Marketing Opportunities in Wearable Technology - ClickZ | #TheMarketingTechAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Once the technology of sci-fi writers and more recently hard-core gamers, next-gen virtual reality headsets is beginning to open a whole new world of brand experiences and story-telling possibilities.

Basic/ Excerpt...

This technology is a natural evolution of experiential digital content – of particular use at large events and conferences. Technology integration at offline events started with simple terminals installed for participants to interact with, moved onto touch-screen technology like Surface and iPads and more recently into RFID-enabled event content and holographic projection. Now finally we move into full first-person digital immersion.

Marteq's insight:

Look, it's fairly far fetched right now to think there is signficiant applicability to the B2B marketer (with the exception of a gimmicky trade show tactic). However, it does prompt the thought as to how visual content is becoming so damn important today. App for Glass? Not yet, but get visual.

erika rosenthal's curator insight, January 25, 2014 9:21 AM

I agree the possibilities are endless. I like the thought of being able to  utilize this in healthcare to have a person explore their own body with data supplied from analysis, and to bring statistics, formerly interpreted by doctors only, to make visual sense to the patient. Now that's a game changer!
