How much does SEO cost? - Search Engine Land

How much does SEO cost? - Search Engine Land | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Survey Question: For those clients you service with ongoing/multi-month contracts, what is the average client’s monthly billing?

10% — less than $500
27% — $500-1,000
29% — $1,000-2,500
20% — $2,500-5,000
15% — $5,000-10,000
There is a lot of variation out there, but the majority of businesses are spending less than $5,000 per month on SEO in the US based on this survey. Forty percent of these people are spending less than $1,000, which is where the truly small businesses and startups often lie. Remember, these prices likely map to the level of difficulty and scope of the project. Those paying less than $500 per month are probably local businesses!

Only 21% of Marketers Include SEO in Their Budgets [Study] - Search Engine Watch

Only 21% of Marketers Include SEO in Their Budgets [Study] - Search Engine Watch | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Nearly 80 percent of marketing decision-makers fail to include SEO in their budgets, according to new research from global tech public relations agency Hotwire.

For its Marketing Silos report, which was released today, Hotwire surveyed 300 senior-level, decision-making marketers. While 52 percent said their spend includes online advertising, only 21 percent said the same for SEO despite the fact that search engines display so much of their digital advertising. According to Google, one in six people on the planet use Google to do more than 1 trillion searches each year.

Developing an SEO Budget - Search Engine Watch

Developing an SEO Budget - Search Engine Watch | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
I’m often asked by prospective clients how much money one should budget in order to achieve Goal X in Y period of time. It would be terrific if search marketing was like programming – a straight-up "if this, then that" proposition. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. There are too many outside variables in play.

The rate of achieving a goal is impacted by a number of factors, beyond your control or the marketers’. Things like the number of competitors in a niche, the quality of competing websites, the quality of competitor link profiles, and the strength of competing brands are all wildcards that will have an impact how quickly one gets traction in organic search.

That said, the right budget is one that you can comfortably afford and stick with for at least three to six months. It takes that long to plan, organize, develop, execute, and then accurately evaluate the success of a campaign. Generally speaking, more budget dollars equals more resources, which can expedite meeting established goals and objectives.

It's a commitment that you have to roll with until you see results down the road. But attribution is a critical part of the process, otherwise your budget will be at risk.

Will 2014 Be An SEO Or PPC Year For Marketers? - Forbes | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

Will 2014 Be An SEO Or PPC Year For Marketers? - Forbes | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
In the battle for marketing dollars, many businesses are torn between search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising.

Basic/ Excerpt...

As businesses plan their 2014 marketing budgets, many are wondering if these death knells mean they should move completely away from SEO. But businesses shouldn’t move so quickly. Google’s changes were designed to stop those who were trying to work the system. For honest businesses, keywords and backlinks can still improve search results, especially when those tools flow naturally throughout a business’s well-crafted, informative copy.

Meanwhile, PPC seems to be just as popular as ever with marketers. In its report, The 2013 State of Paid Search, 72 percent of businesses surveyed reported they plan to spend more on PPC in 2014, up from 70 percent who increased spending in 2013. Google AdWords was by far the area where businesses planned to spend the most money on paid search, followed by Bing Ads, display networks, and Facebook.

Will You Really Need a Higher SEO Budget in 2014? | WordStream | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

Will You Really Need a Higher SEO Budget in 2014? | WordStream | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Do you really need to raise your SEO budget in 2014? Here are some reasons you do need to increase your search engine optimization budget, and by how much.

Excerpt...

4 Reasons Why You Need a Higher SEO Budget in 2014

-- >  Your content marketing strategy is changing. With things like the Hummingbird update, it’s clear that Google is trying to move toward a more conversational approach to search as opposed to single keywords. This will change the way that you should be writing and optimizing your content, and it’s going to take a lot of time and a lot of experienced minds to make this transition.

-- >  Google “Not Provided” data has changed. Now that all organic search data is encrypted, the way that a company evaluates terms and phrases that the target audience uses is going to change. A few new strategies will need to be put in place and mastered, and again, you need a solid and experienced team to make it happen (which of course will cost a pretty penny).

-- >  Everyone has someone in charge of social media. Believe it or not, this is actually something a little bit more recent. In past years the importance of social media has been stressed, but hiring a full-time professional to manage social media wasn’t always at the top of the priority list. This year it is, so if you hope to keep up with your competition, hiring someone with actual social media experience is going to be necessary.

-- >  In-depth articles show that more is better. It’s true that people like to be able to glance over a piece of text and find the answers they need, but this doesn’t mean the article should be short. A long, detailed article (1000+ words), made more readable with the help of bullet points and subheadings, is often what Google is looking to rank. They recently introduced an “in-depth article section” that showcases these longer pieces of content, so it’s clear Google hopes to move in this direction.

Marteq's insight:

The author also states "Although we can’t put an exact number on it, for most companies raising your budget by 30 percent should do the trick (in my personal opinion)."

That's not it. The SEO budget add-on will probably be an additional body or additional hours from your outside agency. Why? It's a result of additional content distributed through social, and the demands to continually optimize this content.
