Twitter’s livestreaming service, Periscope, is the talk of the social marketing world. Yes, it’s another great point of presence for consumers to interact with the brands they love or are just finding out about, but Periscope has more powerful applications for brands and individuals than appear on the surface. Sure, it’s awesome to be a supremely talented social marketer that’s out there pitching Periscope or Meerkat, but why? Why should brands use it?

Recently, Twitter's oft-neglected Direct Message (DM) tool added a group DM function, a feature that was well-received, but then seems to have gone nowhere. The basic principle of Twitter is that if you follow ten people on Twitter, you will only see the tweets of those ten people. Additionally, the only people who will see your tweets will be those ten people. Of course with the advent of the hashtag that has changed. If you add a Hashtag, #OFFICIALANDREASCY for example, the range of your tweet is extended beyond your ten followers to thousands of educators who follow that specific #OFFICIALANDREASCY hashtag on a search column. Having SM apps is all well and good but how we behave in our SM circles is what concerns me as a pedagogue! This blog provides not only the affordances of the 'Twitter' apps but their potential for teaching and learning which can be explored from this site. I would still ask more questions before use with students - but that's me!

In order to determine that I was attempting to log in from an "unusual" location, Twitter must be keeping a history of my previous IP addresses to compare against. This type of security feature is not new, Facebook has been doing this sort of thing for years already. But I've not yet seen it from Twitter. (A few years ago, Twitter seemed to be actively against such an idea.) Unlike Facebook, I don't see anyplace from which I can download my own connection history. Previous IP addresses used are available to those who download a Facebook archive. But IP address information isn't in the Twitter archive that I downloaded today. Via Gust MEES

The other day, I was discussing customer care on Twitter with a friend. We agreed that brands serve consumers better if they have two separate handles: one for content and one to handle questions and issues. It's important not to mix everything. As Lauren Dugan states in this article, it also "indicates to customers that [brands] are serious about customer care." Great companies are also responsive, have a personality, follow up, and know when to take things off of Twitter if need be. Overall, a concise article with nice examples.
