Program Aims to Reduce Carbon Emissions of Heavy Machinery

Program Aims to Reduce Carbon Emissions of Heavy Machinery | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Heavy equipment users have a new tool from Volvo Construction Equipment to help with carbon reduction goals tailored to their operations.

The CO2 Reduction Program is designed to be integrated into an organization’s operational plans and offers insights, analysis, improvement possibilities and sustainability targets while working toward carbon neutrality. The approach will be designed specifically to each user’s goals and operations.

The program will start by analyzing where an organization stands on its carbon emissions to establish a baseline for making improvements. It will use data from connected machines to determine the carbon footprint for all machines, regardless of brand, that are in use. Volvo CE says this will help users visualize the impact of carbon reduction changes over time.

How Does a Passive House Work?

How Does a Passive House Work? | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Passive Houses are built according to a rigorous series of design principles that promote efficiency.

The basic building block of a certified Passive House is a virtually airtight, superinsulated envelope that prevents the infiltration of outside air and the loss of conditioned air. Because joints and cracks aren’t a sufficient source of fresh air, Passive Houses are equipped with a ventilator that takes heat from the stale exhaust air and transfers it to the air that is being drawn in from the outside. (In summer, the process reverses, with the cool inside air pretreating the hot intake air before being vented outside.) Passive Houses also are positioned to capture the sun’s natural heating capabilities in the winter while minimizing solar gain in the summer.

Net Zero Energy Building at Solar Decathlon China 2013

Net Zero Energy Building at Solar Decathlon China 2013 | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

The Solar Decathlon China 2013 is a competition that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are Net Zero, affordable, energy-efficient and attractive.

Summer 2013 will be the first year that a team from Israel will participate in the competition, and their design incorporates passive design features, creating an improved thermal envelope to maintain a comfortable interior environment. Windows, walls, and floors collect, store, and distribute solar energy as heat in the winter and reject heat in the summer...

Since 2002, the Solar Decathlon has involved over 90 teams and influenced thousands of collegiate participants in interdisciplinary research, design and construction of energy-efficient, solar-powered houses.

Build your Entire House Using a 3D Printer | Andreas Christodoulou | LinkedIn

Build your Entire House Using a 3D Printer | Andreas Christodoulou | LinkedIn | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

3D printers are popping up in the news more and more frequently. They can make things from food to weapons. It seems that almost anything can be built by these machines. Now there’s a new technology called Contour Crafting making its way to the forefront. Not only can this tech build an entire house; it can do it in one day.

THE OFFICIAL ANDREASCY's insight:

Contour Crafting can build entire multi-level houses in under a day. An informative post by Andreas Christodoulou.

Free your Lego, K'Nex, Tinkertoys, and beyond! 3D Printer & The Free Universal Construction Kit

A few colleagues and I were talking about developing a water transportation hands-on activity for kids using Lego. In serching for cool Lego stuff (yes, that's what I do for work) I came across this and could not contain my excitement! With a 3D printer (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_printing, I know of 3D printing because we have it in the dept), Carnegie Mellon Professor Golan Levin developed the Free Universal Constrauction Kit - "A collection of nearly 80 adapter bricks that enable complete interoperability between ten popular children's construction toys."

While some people were worried about legal concerns, so far none of the companies have reaised any issues with this. So until then, the models are available for download at http://fffff.at/free-universal-construction-kit/- all you will need then is to print these out with a 3D printer...
