For many people, understanding the unique challenges of nanotechnology can feel a little overwhelming. After all, the general consensus is, that it will be quicker to list what nanotechnology won’t change. One element that this technology is likely to have a profound effect on though, is the usage and the popularity of renewable energy, which is further explained here.
Still seen today by many skeptics as a waste of time in regards to the challenge of climate change, renewable energy is set to become a major determining factor of our century and beyond. To this end, it appears that a major branch of technology influencing the fulfillment of this goal, will be nanotechnology.

Now, more than ever, we are faced against the major implications deriving from the uncontrollable use of non-renewable sources of energy. Our contemporary lifestyle, demands that we drive research and practice, towards alternative sources of energy, such that will deal with the current and future energy crisis. In this respect, nanotechnology, seems to be a promising tool to the future of sustainable and efficient renewable energy. From AlphaGo’s historic victory against world champion Lee Sedol to DeepStack’s sweeping win against professional poker players, artificial intelligence is clearly on a roll.
Part of the momentum comes from breakthroughs in artificial neural networks, which loosely mimic the multi-layer structure of the human brain. But that’s where the similarity ends. While the brain can hum along on energy only enough to power a light bulb, AlphaGo’s neural network runs on a whopping 1,920 CPUs and 280 GPUs, with a total power consumption of roughly one million watts—50,000 times more than its biological counterpart.
Extrapolate those numbers, and it’s easy to see that artificial neural networks have a serious problem—even if scientists design powerfully intelligent machines, they may demand too much energy to be practical for everyday use. Via Jacques Urbanska
