Effective Teacher Professional Development - paper by Linda Darling Hammond et al.

Effective Teacher Professional Development - paper by Linda Darling Hammond et al.  | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Teacher professional learning is of increasing interest as one way to support the increasingly complex skills students need to learn in preparation for further education and work in the 21st century. Sophisticated forms of teaching are needed to develop student competencies such as deep mastery of challenging content, critical thinking, complex problem-solving,

effective communication and collaboration, and self-direction. In turn, effective professional development (PD) is needed to help teachers learn and refine the pedagogies required to teach these skills. However, research has shown that many PD initiatives appear ineffective in supporting changes in teacher practices and student learning. Accordingly, we set out to discover the features of effective PD.

This paper reviews 35 methodologically rigorous studies that have demonstrated a positive link between teacher professional development, teaching practices, and student outcomes. We identify the features of these approaches and offer rich  descriptions of these models to inform those seeking to understand the nature of the initiatives.

Helll-ooo! Watching Videos Does Not Necessarily Lead to Learning -- THE Journal | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Watching videos is fast becoming a canonized instructional method in K-12. But a young researcher from Australia has some provocative, scientifically based research that ought to give video proponents significant pause. But, all is not lost, as we report in this week’s post.

Confused About Ed Tech Tools? New Rating Site for Apps and Games

Confused About Ed Tech Tools? New Rating Site for Apps and Games | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

"To evaluate the bonanza of apps, games, and websites that claim to have educational value, Common Sense Media, a non-profit organization best known for rating commercial media for age-level appropriateness, has developed a new rating system called Graphite. The site provides ratings of products in three categories: pedagogy, engagement, and support. Pedagogy is the highest weighted category, and is based on the depth and quality of content and how well it’s integrated into the mechanics of the reviewed game or website. The highest rated games require players to think critically about how to progress, and help build skills that are transferable. The engagement category measures how well the game grabs and keeps players’ attention, and the support category refers to the quality of tools the product offers to help learners when they get stuck. Support also includes tools for parents or teachers so they can help a learner and gets higher marks if it offers content in a variety of ways, catering to different types of learners. Some examples might be clear tutorials or content offered with both visuals and text. "

Maker Education: Pedagogy, Andragogy, Heutagogy | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Maker education is currently a major trend in education. But just saying that one is doing Maker Education really doesn't define the teaching practices that an educator is using to facilitate it.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, July 27, 2013 5:39 PM

This article is very insightful. It clearly explains and demonstrates the differences that have occured in education over the last 20 years, particularly in the context of technology. Mobile learning is becoming more prominent in classrooms and requires teachers to be active participants in the use of technology.
