Mastering the art of teaching introductory courses

Mastering the art of teaching introductory courses | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

The hardest course a freshman takes is likely to be a “survey class”—an introductory course that provides a broad overview of a particular subject. What makes it hard isn’t necessarily the subject matter, but that it tends to be a large class, with a lot of lecturing necessary to cover all the material.

Instructors often don’t like teaching these introductory courses either for similar reasons: Too much information to address, too many students to make individual connections—and instructors hate facing audiences with glazed eyes.

6 Domains Of Cognition: The TeachThought Learning Taxonomy

6 Domains Of Cognition: The TeachThought Learning Taxonomy | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
How can you tell if a student really understands something?

They learn early on to fake understanding exceptionally well, and even the best assessment leaves something on the table. (In truth, a big portion of the time students simply don’t know what they don’t know.)

The idea of understanding is, of course, at the heart of all learning, and solving it as a puzzle is one of the three pillars of formal learning environments and education.

When asked what he does for a living, Tyler likes to introduce himself to new people by saying, “I make YouTube videos” … and watch the horrified look on their faces. He clarifies, “I make educational YouTube videos, and a lot of people watch them”. Suddenly their faces light up.
They ask what his channel is. Then they go home and check it out, and they’re surprised again."

Why Feedback Should Come in the Middle, Not at the End - InformED

Why Feedback Should Come in the Middle, Not at the End - InformED | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

"Traditionally, we give and receive feedback at the end of projects, assignments, and units. But is this the best way to ensure progress? Researchers are saying it’s not, especially when it comes to encouraging creativity. For optimal academic achievement, teachers and students should consider placing feedback somewhere in the middle. In their study, “

To help your students learn from the feedback, consider adding a "draft" sometime in the middle of your time period allowing for constructive feedback to inform the project rather than helping for only future assignments.

This is something that I am now going to consider when planning my units/lessons.

I think that this article is very useful for me, someone who is going to be a teacher in the 21st century, since it suggest many ways to use the social media in my classes. It is a good method to connect with my students, because nowadays almost everyone uses technology, specially social networks and I could take advantage of this and use it in a good way. One of the suggestions that I found very interesting is the second one: Utilize a Facebook group to stream live talks and host conversations. I never thaught in the use of Facebook to communicate academic topics, or with my teachers, but the use of e-mail or skype might be boring for some students, and Facebook is tho most used social media, so me as teacher could use it to mantain contact with them, and also share some homework, or even give some classes there.

EdTech Should Change the Way Teachers Teach

EdTech Should Change the Way Teachers Teach | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
For a long time, teaching was teacher-centered: the teacher dispensed information through lecture, handouts, or presentations; the students absorbed the information by listening and taking notes. It was repetitive, could become monotonous, and left little room for student exploration or creativity. It was also detrimental to students who couldn’t keep pace with the teacher’s lessons or students who learned in way different from the teacher’s presentation

Next Generation of Online Education: “Learn by Doing” in a Digital World

Next Generation of Online Education: “Learn by Doing” in a Digital World | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Shifting to “Learn by Doing”

Becker of NMC says just as the role of the teacher is switching from “sage on the stage” to one of a coach or guide, there is a shift from rote to active learning. To foster skills of teamwork and collaboration, online education is incorporating group projects and hands-on labs to help students think more critically and retain the content.

Building on the concept of “learn by doing,” online education is expanding to connect students from around the world to learn together and meet professionals. Morris is also executive director of the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration, which partners with more than 200 cultural organizations, such as art museums, to offer real-time interaction with experts in various fields.

This exposure can help answer student questions about the relevance of a geometry class, for instance. “To answer the questions of why you are doing it is key,” says Morris. “[Students] are motivated when they understand and have a reason to understand the material.”

Maker education is currently a major trend in education. But just saying that one is doing Maker Education really doesn't define the teaching practices that an educator is using to facilitate it.
