A world leader in using systems thinking to provide exemplary professional development and improve student success, the Waters Foundation is proud to present the second-annual Milwaukee Systems Thinking Institute, March 14-16, held in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools.
Systems thinking is a fundamental geocompetency and developing student conceptualization of the Earth as a system is key to issues facing society. Additionally, systems thinking is a major topic for geoscience education research (GER), an endeavor that has engaged many members of the community for some time. This workshop will explore and build upon findings from a recent synthesis of work on systems thinking in the context of Earth systems (Scherer, et al., 2017), which identified four conceptual frameworks: Earth systems perspective, Earth systems thinking skills, complexity sciences, and authentic complex Earth and environmental systems.
An agriculture researcher from the University of Florida was invited to K-State to discuss how gender roles affect agricultural practices around the world.
Kathleen Colverson, associate director of international agriculture programs at the University of Florida, presented research on women’s roles in agriculture around the world during a seminar in Waters Hall on Thursday.
The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Collaborative Research on Sustainable Intensification, or SIIL, invited Colverson to Kansas State as an educational opportunity for researchers, faculty and students as a part of an ongoing agricultural seminar series.
Colverson shared her research on women’s roles in agriculture in a presentation titled “Why Integrate Gender into Research Projects? The Importance of Systems Thinking.”
As I am sure many of you will have seen, last Saturday I hosted a webinar with Fritjof Capra in which we discussed a number of themes related to The Systems View of Life. Fritjof Capra is one of the world’s leading thinkers in systems theory and the author of many influential books, such as…
Camp Snowball focuses on empowering educators and their students to think deeply and critically, manage complexity, work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and achieve academically. Teams work together during Camp Snowball to plan how they will use what they’ve learned back in their communities.
Join us for this free webinar highlighting Model Mysteries, An Exploration of Vampires, Zombies and Other Fantastic Scenarios to Make the World a Better Place. Just released, this resource is a fun, engaging entry point to modeling. Based on a philosophy that “copying” models is a stepping stone to understanding, each chapter provides a guided path to build and then modify a model, applying one generic structure to a variety of contexts. The webinar will demonstrate how these small models can easily be built using Stella® online, shared with others, and used to foster new insights about how systems work.
In HSD we use Pattern Logic and Adaptive Action to see, understand, and influence conditions that shape the conflict. Using Adaptive Action cycles helps you work with patterns and navigate the differences that divide individuals and groups. With HSD models and methods you can find sustainable patterns of interaction that resolve conflicts.
Emerging contexts for systems perspectives in design. The Systemic Design Research Network founded at AHO, Oslo School of Architectural and Design, in partnership with OCAD University, Toronto and is organized by a standing committee of four co-organizers Birger Sevaldson, Peter Jones, Harold Nelson, and Alex Ryan. SDRN is a cooperative association based on both academic and industry relationships, and invites faculty and students worldwide to participate in events and share research. We are a member group of IFSR and host a moderated, open online community. RSD participants are invited to join the online forum, and are welcome to participate with us in future activities: workshops, publishing, symposium events.

“Women bring a different set of skills to the business and industry environment,” said Carolyn Casavan, an entrepreneur engineer. “The problem is there is no metric to measure and value the qualities that they bring.”
The documentary follows five young women over the course of two years as they travel from San Francisco to Mississippi and France to Vietnam to pitch to venture capital entrepreneurs, build teams, bring products to market, fail and start over. The film also features perspectives from the first female engineer at Facebook, Ruchi Sanghvi; White House Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith; GoldieBlox CEO Debbie Sterling; and investor Joanne Wilson.
“Women are very good at systems thinking — the architecture of systems,” said Casavan. “They collaborate well, which leads to better product design.”
Last year saw one of the most historically symbolic events of recent years - 195 countries signing the Paris Agreement in order to cut back on pollution contributing to climate change. So when on the 1st June of this year President Donald Trump announced that he would pull the US out of the agreement, there…

DynamiQueST is a showcase of the power of simulations and creative student projects that utilize critical thinking skills to analyze complex dynamic systems.
WHO WILL BE THERE? Students (ages 12-18), teachers and parents will participate in the simulation and learn to utilize some of the tools of system dynamics and systems thinking to analyze and clearly communicate critical thinking. Coaches will be there to facilitate both the simulation and the presentation of student projects.
JOIN US to play the World Climate Simulation created at MIT and used internationally to facilitate current world climate negotiations. No Experience Needed! Just a desire to delve deeper into real-world challenges.
SEE HOW systems thinking and system dynamics (ST/SD) can elucidate both global issues and curricular content.
