A Mental Models Reference (inspired by Charlie Munger) - Airtable Universe

A Mental Models Reference (inspired by Charlie Munger) - Airtable Universe | Thinking about Systems | Scoop.it

In Tren Griffin's article on all that he learned from Charlie Munger, he quotes Munger discussing how to make better decisions:

"I think it is undeniably true that the human brain must work in models. The trick is to have your brain work better than the other person's brain because it understands the most fundamental models: ones that will do most work per unit....You've got to have models in your head. And you've got to array your experience - both vicarious and direct - on this latticework of models."

When I first read this, I realized simultaneously that: 1) this is a great way to think about the world, and 2) I don't do this very well at all. So, I set about trying to get better.

The Cognitive Science Behind Trump's Support

The Cognitive Science Behind Trump's Support | Thinking about Systems | Scoop.it
Cognitive science is the study of HOW we think — the mechanisms we use. This year’s presidential campaign has provided a plethora of evidence for cognitive scientists to study about bias, pre-conceptions, and beliefs. What the science will tell you is that both the hard core Trumpanistas and the mainstream media are exhibiting similar cognitive behavior. They may articulate “facts” and “theories” which are 180 degrees apart — but the mechanisms of bias which both groups demonstrate are pretty much identical.

perspective anti-categorization legal CRL.pdf

perspective anti-categorization legal CRL.pdf | Thinking about Systems | Scoop.it
Cognitive science has traditionally thought of categorization (the organizing of part-whole groupings/relationships) as basal or foundational. DSRP reveals that for every part-whole grouping (or System) there is a perspective that determines what is seen or not seen. Many popular scientific models (from the Species Concept to Maslow's, Bloom's, etc) have suffered the fallacy of discrete categorization. We can all avoid these kinds of thinking errors when we remember that perspective makes things group and there are many many ways to group things. Download it here:
