En la mitad del segundo decenio del siglo XXI, el debate sobre la necesidad y oportunidad de utilizar portafolios de aprendizaje y desarrollo continuo de competencias y profesionalidad ya está, afortunadamente, superado. De ahora en adelante la atención se centrará en el diseño de los mismos y la evaluación acerca de su mayor o menor efectividad, en términos de calidad, eficiencia y eficacia, como instrumento didáctico, para cualquier programa educativo o de formación, y también cual herramienta de gestión de la diferencia del talento de las personas en las organizaciones.

According to the Office of Research Consumer Guide, portfolios are "a collection of student work representing a selection of performance." While artists have kept them for hundreds of years, portfolios emerged in modern education (PDF) from college writing courses in the 1980s. Electronic portfolios are online versions of this tool.

With the massive uptake of web 2.0 technologies, the concept of portfolios has migrated to the cloud giving rise to what is now termed electronic portfolios or ePortfolios for short. An ePortfolio is similar in essence to the traditional pen and paper portfolio but with a set of added advantages. For instance , ePortfolios are accessible anywhere anytime with internet connection. Also ePortfolios allows for a wider inclusion of different multimedia items such as videos, podcasts, audio recordings, slides, text, images and many more.

As I prepare for the EdTech Teacher iPad Summit in Boston next week I've found an incredible opportunity to practice what I will be teaching. I've started a ThingLink ePortfolio to document my own learning throughout the conference. I plan to capture the learning through images, photos and tags to prepare to use and share it.
