Content curation is a mess. Shout founder wants to change all that

Content curation is a mess. Shout founder wants to change all that | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

I tried to get into Pinterest, I really did, but I could just never figure out how to utilize it like many of my friends and colleagues, so I did what any good lifestyle and tech writer should do when confronted with a service they don’t understand – give up on it. Out of site, out of mind. I obviously understand the benefits of a curation service like Pinterest, but it wasn’t for me.

Why am I talking about Pinterest, you ask? Well, this new app from Jeff Weisbein, called Shout, is kind of like a stripped-down version of Pinterest without the focus on pictures linking you to everything. Available on both iOS and as a Google Chrome extension, the app basically functions as a curation tool that lets you quickly add links to customized lists that you, or someone you know, has created. It’s a breeze to use, and really has almost endless possibilities for personal endeavors, hobbies, and collaborations with other creatives. Or maybe you just want to share some dank memes with your buds.

I had the chance to talk with Jeff to learn more about Shout, as well as the inspiration behind the app and how Shout can even be used for quick newsletter creation. Check it out below!...

Shout is a cool content curation and sharing app worth trying.

Clip Anything from the Web and Organize Into Collections with Memit (Web + iOS)

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Robin Good assesses pros and cons of Memit, a new content clipping and saving tool.

Robin Good's curator insight, July 1, 2013 7:14 AM

Memit is a content curation app that allows you to clip any web page (as is) text, image or video available online and to save it inside a collection.

Collections can be set to be private or public, and you can invite as many other people as you want to collaborate and contribute to it.

Individual items clipped can be commented, tagged and can be shared on your preferred social media channels. You can follow other Memit users and see their stream of clipped items just like similar tools do.

Each user gets a Profile Page showcasing his work and publicly saved items.

My comments: Good flexible clipper allows easy grabbing of what you are interested in and easy storing into your categories and tags. Good actegorization functions. Good for collaborative use around the collection of texts, excerpts or video clips. Not so great at collection display (only a linear, vertical list format is avaiable for now), publishing or exporting (no embed feature).

P.S.: If you have backed up your Clipboard.com collections, you can import them directly into Memit.

Free to use.

Interesting tool!

Jose Jordan's curator insight, July 2, 2013 1:38 PM

Collect Any Type of Web Content Into Visual Collections with the New Bundlr

Collect Any Type of Web Content Into Visual Collections with the New Bundlr | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

From Journalism.co.uk: "The content curation website Bundlr has just announced a new version of its service which allows for embedding of content from a wide range of sources.

By partnering with Embedly the site now supports over 200 sources of content, including Storify, Pinterest and Amazon, for users to add to their bundles.

Embedly is the service that the new version of Twitter uses to embed photographs and articles in your Twitter stream and is used by a host of other sites such as Reddit and Bitly and comes as a WordPress plugin.

While Bundlr was originally seen as an alternative to sites like Storify, which can be used to create stories from curated links and content, Bundlr's focus is now on creating a top-level resource for curated content around a story or topic."

Best Free Content Curation Tools 2012

Best Free Content Curation Tools 2012 | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

...Curating content done properly, IMO has its positives. I do it here on iblogzone, via my weekly speedlinks (weekly roundups). With so much information out there, this is one method where users are starting to see its advantages, due to its objective of “finding the best content about a certain topic”, combining them together, and letting like minded people to know about them. Really great to filter out the noise, and useless content....

Did you notice the words, meaningful, great information and credit your sources? That’s the essence of being a great content curator and nothing else....

Snapzu.com - Create, share and discover the best content on the web.

Snapzu is a new social media and curation tool. It feels like a combination of Pinterest and Scoop.it. Basically, you set up a profile, choose a bunch of "tribes" to follow, search and discover content, and create and share posts from your curation as well as new posts you create. It's now in beta stage and is worth exploring though the number of topics and members is still small.

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Time will tell if there's room for another social media channel like Snapzu but its features and design are well done.

Prismatic wants to be the newspaper for a digital age

Prismatic wants to be the newspaper for a digital age | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it
Surrounded by an overwhelming amount of digital content, many people are looking for something that can fill the role of a digital newspaper -- filtering and highlighting interesting content.

What did the printed newspaper provide in its heyday as the information-delivery system of choice? A collection of news and other interesting content, selected by knowledgeable editors from a wide range of sources, presented in an easy-to-scan format. Now, the supply of information we have available to us is almost never-ending — but we still need an easy and efficient way to filter it, and find what is interesting and relevant, and share it with others. The field is filled with contenders who believe they can solve that problem, including News.me and Flipboard and Zite, and one of the newest is a San Francisco-based startup called Prismatic....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Prismatic is one of my three essential content finding tools. highly recommended is one of its 17 were more major categories matches what you need.
