En marketing, a great image is often a key component of the message. Constant need for pictures can dig deep into your pocket when using stock photography. If you want a particular image, then it makes sense to pay for the stock images as it will be a lot cheaper than to hire a photographer. What to do when you need images all the time, but their marketing lifespan can be measured only in days, maybe hours? Images for Facebook posts, email newsletters, individual slides in presentations that you use only once… Paying 10 or 20 dollars per image for these adds up. So where do you get free images? I have collected a bunch of sites that give you exactly that… free images for commercial use.

Teenagers say goodbye to Facebook, adding street cred to WeChat

Teenagers say goodbye to Facebook, adding street cred to WeChat | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

We’ve heard about how Facebook is losing its street cred and its teenage audience as more and more baby boomers (their parents) join the platform. Where are all the teenagers going to, then? The answer is WeChat.

Chinese messaging app WeChat is the fastest growing social app used by youths worldwide, according to a study by Global Web Index. The latest study was conducted based on the feedback from teenagers aged 16 to 19 globally, excluding China. WeChat saw a 1,021 percent increase in usage among youths between Q1 and Q3 2013. The second-fastest growing is Vine at a rate of 639 percent, followed by Flickr (254 percent)....

The QR Code’s Punk Rock Little Brother is Gonna Shake Things Up | Business 2 Community

The QR Code’s Punk Rock Little Brother is Gonna Shake Things Up | Business 2 Community | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

Right now people are using their smart phones to scan QR Codes which allows them to either download information, or be taken to a web page of some sort. I happen to love QR codes, when they are used strategically. But this new technology adds several new dimensions.

A lot.

Rather than scanning a code, Aurasma’s software, which is a free downloadable app for smart phones, recognizes images. The company actually describes it as a “virtual browser”, but I’m not sure that terminology does it justice.

When you see an image that is accompanied by the company’s “A” logo, you know that you can scan it. Once the image is recognized, it takes you to an augmented reality experience that brings that image to life, and allows you to interact with it....

The Media Evolution: Is Your Content Keeping Up?

The Media Evolution: Is Your Content Keeping Up? | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

In response to sea changes in how people find, consume and share information, traditional media outlets are retooling their newsrooms and evolving their coverage.   Despite the still-challenging economic environment, many outlets are investing heavily on people and technology, in order to deliver a news product that satisfies audience appetites for rich visuals, tablet-friendly design and up-to-the minute reporting. This begs the question: is PR content keeping up?

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Chicago Sun-Times dumps pro photographers for reporters with iPhones. Bad move as visuals gain in importance. And say, asks Sarah Skerik, is PR keeping up with the new content visuals trend?

Jeff Domansky's curator insight, November 5, 2013 11:39 PM

Sarah Skerik wonders if PR is keeping up with the visuals trend like journalism is forced to do.

Meet Fancy: A Social E-commerce Platform

Meet Fancy: A Social E-commerce Platform | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

Fancy, a crowdsourced cross between Pinterest and a catalog, is capable of selling thousands of units of a product, but only if it grabs the attention of enough users...

How Do You Fancy?

Fancy presents products, split into 16 categories, in an image-driven format. The site's 8 million users see big pictures of each product, along with a few descriptive words. They can "fancy" a product (like pinning an image on Pinterest), look at a longer description, or purchase the product.

There are also monthly subscriptions of products, some themed by celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher or Pink.Users follow others to see what they like, adding to the social nature of the site, and can add products they like to the system, with a link to the seller's site. The Fancy negotiates access to sell them or vendors can directly approach Fancy and offer their goods....

Review 13 examples of brands using LinkedIn company page features effectively.

...We recently reported that, in a study of the over 5,000 inbound marketers where we pitted LinkedIn against Facebook and Twitter, LinkedIn proved to be the most effective social media channel for lead generation -- 277% more effective, in fact. As a marketer, particularly if you're in the B2B game, how could you not leverage that awesome lead generation potential?

Well, it's been several months now, and I wanted to give you LinkedIn marketers out there another chance. While it was still difficult to find examples of businesses effectively using all of the company page features at their disposal, it was a bit easier to find some great examples of individual feature use....

Kooaba Leapfrogs QR Codes with Shortcut App

Zurich-based startup Kooaba is out to replace QR Codes with a mobile app called Shortcut, an updated of an app it formerly called Paperboy.

Why should marketers consider a shortcut to quick response codes? “We believe QR codes are belonging to an intermediate technology used for things it was never meant for," wrote Tom Desmet in a company blog post. "Despite the enormous media attention QR is getting, it still is not at a level where people are really using it.”...
