Why I switched from Google to DuckDuckGo; it's all about the bangs

Why I switched from Google to DuckDuckGo; it's all about the bangs | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

Google is fun to say, but DuckDuckGo — at least for me — is a lot more fun to use. While I can’t repeat the name as a verb (I can ‘Google it’ on Google; I don’t know what I’d say for a DuckDuckGo search), the upstart search engine has quickly become my go-to on a day to day basis.

While its main draw is privacy, DuckDuckGo has another killer feature you may not have heard of. In fact, it should cause you to consider ditching your existing search engine for DuckDuckGo — yes, even Google. I’m talking about bangs.

No, not 80s hair bangs (but they would look cool on their mascot, Dax). Bangs are simply exclamation points ahead of site tags, which redirects you to that page....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

I really love using DuckDuckGo for search too. And "bangs" are a useful feature for faster finding.

The Best Search Engine You're Probably Not Using

The Best Search Engine You're Probably Not Using | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

Do you like privacy? Do you shun surveillance and eschew spam? Do you like simplicity? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you'll love DuckDuckGo....

If this sounds like something you don't want to be a part of, start searching on DuckDuckGo. Since DuckDuckGo uses some 50 sources—including Bing, Yahoo! and Wolfram Alpha—for its search queries, you'll get results that look similar to what Google returns. DuckDuckGo even improves on traditional search engines in some ways; it combs through results, pulling out irrelevant links and spam and content farm fodder so that its returns are good and clean. Meanwhile, an anonymous search option uses Tor to route your query through a series of encrypted relays. You can even do voice search with a new-ish Google Chrome extension....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Personally, I find DuckDuckGo is a great additional search engine tool to use when Google results don't seem satisfying or accurate enough.

Search Engine DuckDuckGo Is Taking On Google By Doing The One Thing They Won't Do

Search Engine DuckDuckGo Is Taking On Google By Doing The One Thing They Won't Do | Top Social Media Tools | Scoop.it

They won't track you and it makes their searches better.Named after the playground game duck duck goose, the site is not just banking on the support of people paranoid about GCHQ and the NSA.

Its founder, Gabriel Weinberg, argues that privacy makes the web search better, not worse. Since it doesn't store your previous searches, it does not and cannot present personalized search results. That frees users from the filter bubble – the fear that, as search results are increasingly personalized, they are less likely to be presented with information that challenges their existing ideas....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

DuckDuckGo is the little search engine that could.
