Text During a Movie! Here's the First Trailer for 'APP,' a Film That Wants You to Keep Your Phone ON | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Paula Bernstein:  "Usually moviegoers are instructed to turn off their smartphones while watching a film, but with "App," the new Dutch thriller directed by Bobby Boermans, viewers are encouraged to keep their phones on in order to experience the second-screen content."

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, February 19, 2014 5:14 AM

Usually moviegoers are instructed to turn off their smartphones while watching a film, but with "App," the new Dutch thriller directed by Bobby Boermans, viewers are encouraged to keep their phones on in order to experience the second-screen content.

As the first film made with the intentional inclusion of content on a second, mobile screen, "App" relies on an app, IRIS, which is equipped with sonic technology that triggers additional content during the movie.

Though it's not required for viewing the movie, using the second screen adds layers to the big-screen narrative.

The audience will be advised to leave their devices on their laps while watching the film. When there is additional content available on the second screen, their devices will vibrate.

I really like the transmedia storytelling idea, but simultaneous transmedia? i'm not so sure...what happens to the unfiltered narration experience? i'm more for the before and after. unless films are actually written with transmedia in mind. simply transmedia-ing existing films won't work. at least not for the core story.

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Bryan M. Wolfe:  "Using a smartphone in a movie theater is a big no-no. But using a tablet is absolutely fine when the movie you’re watching comes from Disney and stars The Little Mermaid."

Second screen user experience. Great example!

Peter Isaksson's comment, September 13, 2013 3:23 AM
How will this effect the people sitting behind?
Katie Chase's curator insight, December 5, 2013 9:55 AM

This defeats the purpose of going to the movie theater entirely. It does not make sense to have everyone in the audience bring their tablet to the screening to be able to interact. When everyone in the theater is on a tablet, who is actually watching the film? Audience interactions are a great idea but they are not appropriate for places such as movie theaters. –Aellise Czupryna
